Steering rack line
So I took my steering rack off on my way to get to the engine mounts and oil belly pan for removal. After taking the steering rack off, I found that there was some kind of soft line that had completely fallen off (disintegrated) between these 2 parts of the steering rack. For now i have them capped off with silicone hoses because i was cleaning the rack and didn't want to get anything in the ports. I need to know what type of line this is so that i can replace it. My pictures are kinda bad, sorry for that.
No ATF has been gushing or pouring out of them, so idk what they are even for honestly. If anyone could explain what they are and what kind of line i need would be appreciated, thanks guys. ![]() There is one on each side of the steering rack, and it seems to be made of plastic. ![]() This picture shows the soft line that disintegrated off and was sitting just beneath the steering rack somehow. ![]() This is all I could find in the catalog, no specifics, but this is the line for sure. |

its a balance vent tube so the seals dont blow out when going from left to right just replace it with another good quality hose

I'm not trying to be an ass, but i feel like if i walked into NAPA and asked for "good quality hose", they would just stare at me, lol, what kinda hose would work for this application?

A strong rubber or poly-vinyl should work fine...I believe it would als be routed upwards, to keep water out from deep puddles...like diff vents are on trucks...

this is a vent from one side of the rack to the other its not vented to atmosphere.
If you have some silicone line that fits the outlets tightly then use it.

Ok, thanks. After some thought I was able to understand what you said it was for. Thanks guys.
I'll post a picture in a bit of the steering rack all cleaned up. My tie rods are bad and old, and will be replaced one day, unfortunately not today though. |

FWIW the rack bushings your going to install may not be the best,
as once they are installed only one sde of the bushing will capture the rack finger. There are new Derlin bushings that are pressed into each side of the rack and thus will hold it place. The other option is get a few thick washers and fit them to the side thats not captured thus forcing the fingers to not be able to move OR read the next paragraph. This may not matter at first but if the metal bushings start moving then its quite possible that one of the rack ends could loosen, then you will have a leak inside the rack that will require the rack to be removed and the lockring tightened and good bushings installed
