rev limiter
ok, I'm new so i'm sure the use of the words "rev limiter" are against the rules, but I have a 15 year old daughter that will routinely drive mine in the near future. Does anyone have any suggestions? not looking for any "onboard" system, just a simple aftermarket tach/instrument that i can mount under the dash with a rev limiter adjustment dial.

The rev limit is built into the chips in the brain. You might be able to get a set of chips with a switch that selects between lame and wicked. I've heard of custom chips with as many as 4 or 8 sets, but no idea on cost of the modification.
Maybe a GPS phone with tracking? Hate to say how many times the 16 year old driver discussion has gone through the 928 groups, some oppose, some favor, some have had great results, some less so. Its a very fast car, but its also a very safe car. I'd worry a lot more about the boyfriend driving it. |
Rev-Limit Rotor
Hey Lukerman, Some of the Bosch distributors had an optional drop-in rotor available that installs a simple and inexpensive mechanical rev-limiter. As the engine RPM climbs, a calibrated spring gradually stretches through centrifugal force to direct the ignition spark to ground at a predetermined point. As the RPM drops, the ignition spark returns to the plugs.
Although I have not seen one of these things for a 928 - it may be available as a special order. You could then pop in the rev-limiting rotor just before your daughter drives your 928. As an additional safety precaution just stretch the spring with a few good tugs to artificially lower the cut out point to around 1800 RPM. That should put her top speed somewhere around 55 mph….. ;) Guess I should have looked at the year of the vehicle being discussed - the rev-limit rotor would more than likely not be an option on an 86 Good Luck, Michael |

Plugging the 'octane loop' together will make it slower.
There are two single terminal plugs at each ECU connector. They may still be factory taped to the harness. The plugs at the EZF ignition brain (steel cover with vacuum line), with green wires, short the air temp sensor input. This retards the ignition timing by 3° at higher loads or WOT. This is known as the 'octane loop', for use if substandard fuel is used. |
boyfriend??? what boyfriend??? what do you know that I dont??? lol
i agree with all of that, but I have a good girl so far. Most cars will do 100mph so I know kids will do what they are gonna do, regardless if the car will go 165. all I can do is pray that she will abide by the laws and my rules as well. thanks for all the help. I feel you have convinced me to guide her vs trying to control the car. and if any of you have seen this so-called boyfriend, you tell him to keep out of the drivers seat of my car, and my daughter. |
Teen age girl + Porsche = teen age boy magnet.
Firm rule I would make is that NOBODY else drives the Porsche. Main catch I see with a 928 is that it has a lot of torque, so a 3000 rpm rev limit would not keep reckless speed out of the picture. A lower limit would be a bit ridiculous to drive. |

I wouldn't worry about it. She will hit something with or with out the limiter. It's just how new drivers are. I'm not saying she'll crash, but she'll scrape a pole in the parking lot, take off the front on a garage, drop a wheel off the road and rip a wheel off. These things are inevible with newbies and not a comment on your girl. No matter how carefull and responsible the kid is, they are learning to drive. Oh, and there's no way in hell your front chin spoiler is staying on, just no way. best of luck

dang pete, thats rough to hear but probably true. I will have to do baby steps, small drives from here to there til she feels confident. ..

yes then take her to a big parking lot and and let her try doing full throttle starts with the front wheels turned,
this should, let the rear break loose then she can figure out whats gonna happen , so she can have some expectations, this works better with a snow filled parking lot of course no light poles should be anywhere close, and you should be ready to turn the key one notch if things get out of her control. I spun my 84 Euro 90 to the right then caught it then it went 360 the other way the tires were old and the street was just damp enough to provide the slippery needed, lucky i didnt hit a curb or other traffic behind me |

already done that but not in 928 yet. I took both my kids to an open abandoned lot and let them experience the feeling of being out of control and just when they felt it was fun, i told them to realize that they just hit a family of 5 and may have killed a child. I also took my kids to the insurance auto auction to show them wrecked cars with blood all over the floor and windows, and showed them what death really looks like. I feel that all drivers should walk thru the auto auction, before they drive, to see reality.

Not sure if they still show "Red Asphalt" in High School Drivers Training, but it's a real wake up call.

I think an adjustment stop (removable) for the accelerator so it doesn't actually go anywhere close to WOT would be a good idea. But other than that most of your troubles for potential car damage come down to inexperience and thats basically unsafe at any speed for a while... At least at slower speeds it will be just the car that gets damaged. Neither of my boys will drive my GTS until they hit 30 years old and have got experience of driving a manual car some other way... To me its really a suicide machine in the hands of a (male) teenager - just not even worth thinking about for me... Alan |
