Having just gone through this with my '84, first pull the guts from the master and make sure they are the same as the old. Here is my RL post and in the thread is another thread about the MC differences. I bled mine a hundred times and then realized this was the problem. Right after bleeding or after the car got warm, it would shift fine. Once cold, I would get grinding into reverse and a dragging clutch. I cut the piston down 4.5mm and all is tight.

Also, the reverse bleed method really is easy. I just put a smaller tube on my power bleeder and reverse bled from the slave with 5lbs of pressure. Only a few ounces of fluid are needed to get it to the reservoir so a mityvac could also work. after fully draining from the slave. Took all of 30 seconds and there is no air in there anymore.

I know it helps to have the car at an angle too. Front up rear down I think.

reverse bleed by gravity? Gravity bleed will most definitely leave a pocket of air in the master. Mity Vacs can be used as a pump. Believe me, I spent days trying to get mine right until I cut off the extra 4mm from the piston. The reverse bleed is the quickest and best way to do it.

well i did the reverse bleed with an oil can with a pump ,it worked perfectly,,,the master and slave i bought from porsche and its seems to be good so far,, it actually works better than it ever did,,there may have been some aftermarket hydraulics in there to begin with,, porsche was like triple the money of similar vendors.i just took it out for a ride for the first time in three months,, im sorry i promised to sell it to someone

See if it works the same after cooling down. Mine always worked right after bleeding. If it drags next time you drive it, check the piston in the MC.
