oil level

Guys changed oil in the 928 yesterday. Owners manual calls for 7.9qts. I put in 7 qts checked the level was reading half way between hash marks. added another 3/4 of a qt. started the car and ran it for a couple of minutes. Shut the car off waited about 5 min checked again level is now reading below the first mark. Waited 30 min still reading below 1st mark. The owners manual states there is a 1.5 qt difference between the marks. That said I would need to add another qt for a total of 8.75 or 1 qt. more than the manual calls for. Doesn't sound right to me. 1984 928S 5spd I believe it is a 4.7 hood sticker says 285ci. P.S. changed filter also

What about taking into account the Oil Filter which holds about a quart itself.

oil level

I had thought about that but the manual reads to remove and replace the filter then fill crankcase with 7.9qts. The3 way it reads leads me to assume that the filter capacity was figured in. That is why I am wondering. I don't want to over fill the engine but I do not want to run a qt. low either

Go by the Dipstick. Forget those numbers. Don't run the car until your on the fill line of the stick. Make sure your on a level surface.

That was kind of the direction I was leaning. I will add another qt and see where that puts me. Man 8+qts even oil changes are more expensive in a Porsche. But I should be able to take it for my first ride today.

What kind of oil are you using? You can easily just use Dino Oil. Once you start using Synthetic, then that's where it gets expensive at $10 quart. I use Royal Purple 15/40 in both my 928's.

Do you have the correct year manual for your car? My '82 manual states 8.45 quarts.

Also is manual US quarts or maybe imperial?

My 83 gets 8.5 with a filter, or near as to per dip stick.

I've also heard of cars with the wrong dip stick, but no clue on whats right or how to tell.

I am using castrol full synthetic. 10w40. I wasn't sure either so I added another 3/4 qt. for a total of 8.5 and I am now a little over halfway between the hash marks. I figure that is not too little and if it is over it will only be over 1/2 qt which should be ok.
