Fuel Tank Sending unit Seal?
I have read about others having the problem with gas coming out of the top of the tank when filled. What seal or O ring is needed to fix this problem?

Sometimes it is due to a crack in the tank and sometimes the seal. I believe Roger at ************ can get the seal for you.
Are you having this problem?

I am. I have only filled it to the top once and now I wait until it is almost empty and then fill halfway to be on the safe side but I want to fix it. Does anyone know a part number or a specific name for the seal? I'm totally new to 928's so I have a lot to learn.

Have you removed the sending unit before? You may want to pull the tank and check for cracks. Ar you sure it is coming from this seal?

It may also be the breather tube to the fill pipe area has hardened cracked and leaking. . That's what mine was. Next time you fill the tank you can pop the black plastic cover in the trunk to expose the sender cover. If there is not seepage there then it's most likely the breather tube. It called the sending unit seal or something to that effect, you'll get the right seal if you ask for that.

I'm not exactly sure what is happening and I will look into it. Right now it's my second project vehicle but wasn't suppose to be a project. I haven't investigated enough but I will. I have searched but can't find a thread showing how to remove the tank. I assume it comes out from the top inside the rear hatch, is that correct? I don't have any manuals yet, what's needed to remove the "cap"(?) to get to the sending unit or breather tube?

![]() A screw driver will pry off the black cover. The tank comes out the bottom. It has to be dropped to get to the breather. Total PIA, the hose goes thorugh the chassis

I'm in the same situation. I am about to drop my tank and take it to get cleaned and will be replacing this hose when the tank it out. I had a severe issue with my tank and bad gas. Nasty Nasty stuff.... You might be surprised what you will find in your tank. Has this car stat for an extended period of time?

I made a lot of mistakes on this one. I really didn't want to drop the tank but I guess I will.......during the summer. My other project takes precedence for the next couple months. As far as I know the car has not set very much but the PO didn't reveal much truth and I didn't actually talk to him so I don't know the whole history of the car.

Also, don't forget all the PO Amplifier Mounts on the rear deck. Normally you'll see the small holes under the deck carpet, then you can pretty much follow those holes to the top of your Fuel Tank.
Here is your parts and numbers: ![]()

I've been carrying around item #10 for a couple years trying to figure out how to make a "wrench" for it out of PVC or ABS drain pipe or something. Hard to get the suckers off or back on tight without messing them up.

When you get the new sending unit seal if that is where your having the leak do this.Unplug sending wire plug and remove clamp and hose next to it (very difficult) Then using large channellocks unscrew the plastic nut. If your going to remove the tank from the car drain tank and follow Dwaynes procedure. I would add that if you are going to remove the intank filter and or pump wash out with water first then carefully use a heat gun to get the aluminum housing hot before trying to unscrew the 17MM filter. Keep the plastic outer hub cool and unscrew the filter. I used a gallon of acetone to dissolve all the 15 year old gas residue.Washed out pristine clean and rewashed it with paint thinners. Do not put any loading on the various plastic hose barbs on the tank as you may break them. You did not mention what year your car is but like all of these older cars the tank straps are exposed and rustout. Mine had to be repaired and pieces welded in on the strap that shields the fuel line.
On reinstalling change the foam insulation on this strap to 3/4" heater hose split lengthwise. The foam just retained water and road salt are the strap rusts away. The heater hose will nit hold water and still protect the gasline. Best of luck. |

I have pulled my tank. What is the procedure to pull the sending unit out of the tank. It feels like it is attached inside. Mine will not freely pull up and out.

I don't think that's what he is talking about Mike. Once you remove the large plastic nut, the Sender doesn't want to pull up. This happened on my Euro when I was preparing to clean out the tank. It's the lid that surrounds the lower part of the sender which is grabbing it.
My only way of getting the sender out was to force it out, which will pull the cover off. Once you do this, it's impossible to put back on since there is no opening on the tank to get your hand inside to put the cap back on. I left mine off. Hope this helps.

I have removed the nut. Can I just put it back and not replace the seal. Or, since I removed the nut the seal is trash now.

I would replace the seal. Also this is what is going to give you a view of the inside of the tank so that you know the condition of it. I would suggest getting it out.
Dano I am lucky in that my hands will fit into the hole from the fuel sending unit and I can place the ring back on top. Now are there connectors to hold it in place that snap in or twist on or something?

And yes it will come out. Mine was stuck in there pretty good. I think i had to pry it out a bit. The seal was sticking to the tank because it had been on there for nearly 30 years. That reminds me. I need to check the manufacture date on my car.... It's 30th birthday is this year.... Well probably was sometime last year depending when it was manufactured but either way. 2012 makes it 30.

My lid was also off, and my hand would not fit. It looks like it is "spot welded plastic". I just repaired my sender, put a new gasket, and had my daughter reach in and put the lid in place, then shoved the sender back through it..,,
