NEW VIDEO. Rattle at and around idle STILL here after new starter.
 

PLEASE take a listen and let me know what you think.

The exhaust is tight and not hitting anywhere.

Heat shields are tight.

New starter so that is okay and tight. Rattle I THOUGHT was coming from the starter...but no.

Just released tension on the collar and re torqued.

All bolts on the fly wheel are tight.

The rattle is most evident when the car first starts and when its turned off.

I have heard bad torque tube bearings before and to me does not sound like this. In other words its not constant.

I am out of ideas...any feedback would help. Thanks in advance.

Only while running? Hmmm...

It certainly does sound like something near the flywheel, or something in that area...Definitely not an exhaust rattling type of sound...And the torque conv is at the back, but this really sounds like it's in the area you have in the video.....sometimes hard to pinpoint these things... Curious: Do you have a mechanic's stethoscope? I haven't had to use mine for a while BUT, it comes in REALLY HANDY for stuff like this, and for weird noises that I sometimes just can't pinpoint...

Did use my stethoscope and the sound seems to be coming from...........the torque tube! CRAP! Looks like I will be doing a TT R&R in my near future. If I live that long. Last thing I needed right now. Thanks for the help guys.

I saw the video where you were hitting on the starter with a mallet... That noise you were hearing is just the bendix in the starter, or something similar.. There wasnt anything wrong with the starter

As for the noise, Sounds like TT. If it were lose TQ bolts,they wouldnt make any noise after you bumped the key because the flywheel is spinning, hence forcing the driveshaft to be planted firmly.

TQ bearings. Have fun with this!

Update 1-28-13

Replaced the TT bearings and torque convertor bearing and the rattle is GONE! So this WAS the TT...I have never heard one do this befoe. thought I would post incase others have this in the future. I THINK part of the rattle may be the balancer inside the tube being loose as its bearings were toast.

Also while the car was on stands I replaced the motor mounts and the oil pan seal. All this has been in my parts box for years...so its good to get it all done.

Been following your thread on RL. My 87s4 sounds EXACTLY the same. Been studying Dwayne'swrite up on the procedure Did you drop the tranny completely our were u able to do without.

I dropped the whole drive train from flywheel back. Its not THAT bad really. Some strap the transmission and TT up and remove the rear axel ( might be easier) but I did it all in one move.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359474655.jpg
