87 928s4 bowed flex plate

i took off the lower bellhousing/flywheel cover, and my flexplate was bowed, i loosened the allen bolt, and it moved a bit, but remained bowed, although less.

145k miles. i dont think anyone has relieved the pressure in awhile.

i can turn crankshaft 2-3 full revolutions, and it moved down the spline a bit. i still show 8 mm of spline.

i think the flexplate is still bowed slightly. and is not straight.

do i loosen the flywheel bolts? anyone have a permanent blowed flexplate?

another point....when i see photos of other splines near the coupler bolt, i can see very little of the spline exposed. i have about 8 mm of spline exposed, and wonder if that is normal.

it is possible that my flex plate is bowed 1-2 mm and needs time to set back.

you didnt mention if you checked the rear driveshaft pinch bolt,

if you didnt check it then your not finished with the job.

SO you might start over,

release the front bolt,
then remove the rear drive shaft pinch bolt,
then inspect the rear bolt ,
add a drop of blue loctite to the bolt,
then install it,
torque to 66 ft/lb,
then install the front pinch bolt with a drop of blue loctite.
NOTE pry the flywheel back prior to tightening the pinch bolt.

rear bolt

how to remove the rear coupler bolt...i dont see any procedures for that so far merlin....do you need to drop the exhaust?

i know in other porsches, there is an inspection hole near tranny where that bolt can be loosened and removed.

rear coupler bolt

so far i can say that whoever designed the exhaust for 928 vs other porsches they wanted to make sure it didnt shake...there are brackets everywhere and it is very very sturdy. i am going under the car this weekend and see if i can remove the rear coupler bolt...

to remove the exhaust
first disconnect the O2 sensor from the plug at the CE panel ,
then push it through the chassis.
with car up on 4 jack stands put a milk crate under the rear center area
so the pipes can be resting on top of the crate when dropped
remove the air line with a 27 and 22 mm wrench,
then undo the 6 bolts that hold the manifolds
once you drop the exhaust,
drop the rear heat shields then you will see the rear hole in the trans to remove the bolt

flex plate

funny thing, i cant seem to find my o2 sensor. usually it is near flange before cats, but no sign of it. this owner deleted the smog pump, i wonder if he got rid of o2 sensor as well. i will do the merlin exhaust removal and report back on the rear coupler bolt condition etc.
