Driver's door won't open

I've begun to understand the personality of our 1984 928s now. Thanks to help from a couple of people on this BBS, I've solved a wheel issue. Recognizing that, the car invented a more basic problem...

Cold weather has arrived in Chicagoland, so I took the car out for one last "errand." As I went to unlock the door, the driver's side door lock post didn't pop up to its full height. The sound of the mechanism (always kind of a pained whine) seemed fine, but the door latch would not work. The passenger's door opens fine from both inside and out but the driver's door will only open from inside. After locking and unlocking again (even with the center console key button and the circular turning knob options) the door will still not open from the outside.

In fairness, it's pretty dad-blamed cold here and the mechanism might just need to warm up. But I'd like to know if anyone else has had such an issue and what steps could be taken to resolve it.

Sorry to tell you this, but you've encountered a classic problem. Your door handle latch needs to be replaced:

Thanks for the reply. The link to the online repair process is a huge help. It sounds like this is not an uncommon problem with 928s.

Oh well, there's work to be done. At least I have a lead on how to do it.
