Timing belt
 

So today I got the timing belt off my '82 US 928 manual. The clutch slave cylinder was a bear to get out of the flywheel hole, but I did that. I pulled the timing belt but I noticed that the two cam gears are not equal. The passenger side one is dished a bit more at the front than the driver's side one. I never noticed any problems with the motor, but just wondered if this is normal.

It's normal if the timing belt was overtensioned.

I didn't mean that the teeth are dished. I mean the gear on the passenger side looks like it was put on backward compared to the drivers side. As if the mounting point in the gear is offset and the gears are put in in opposite ways.

Look at the wear marks from the belt. First off, you need new gears the coating is worn off. Second, the belt is tracking centered based on the wear marks so it looks fine to me.

You still need new gears though. The coating saves your belt from what I understand.

One looks to be on backwards.

Those also appear to be of the older style / using old style belt.
