Smoke/ burning smell..

Trying to get my car running right, something sucks with the RPM, and idle,. High rpm, motor sounds weak, but they problem i notice now, shortly after starting a weird smell, some faint smoke coming from front passenger side timing belt cover area. . . smell does not smell like burning gas or oil, almost like and electrical, or metallic smell if that makes sense?

I had the bearings in my smog pump fail which eventually created smoke in that area from the friction on the V belt.
I also had the fuel vapor "Y" connector failure under the passenger wheel well.

Hi Ty what year is the car your working on?
If there is any doubt about the smell it would be wise to do some investigation
first remove the fan belt for the air pump and spin the pulley if its not smooth then maybe the airpump is seizing ,

next remove the air cleaner top and then remove the air cleaner element,
being careful to not let it flip over,

tap the dirty side of the filter onto a piece of white paper looking for small black particles this would be belt debris.

Next remove the right side cam tower belt cover take a picture of the belt , post it here
Put the engine at TDC and check the belt tension and if the timing is correct

So Ty, for your entertainment... the other part of my story with the air pump would be that my wife was not on-board with the purchase of the 928S.
I talked her into going out in it for a fancy night on the town...one mile from the house I had a belt fire from the air pump failing...
She has never been back in it, but we are still married.
I bought a fire extinguisher for the car.

got the car running normal, smoke is the issue now. we crawled under the car, the cat, after two minutes of running is extremely hot. The exhaust is covered in oil, but the oil levels in my car are good. ? not 100% that the liquid is oil, it does not seem like it smells like oil.

How do i mechanically change the idle on the car? It will run, but idles so low now it stalls out unless i apply constant power to the gas.

On top of that, there is a shreik, or squeal from with top of the oil filler cap or hose that attaches to it.

There is a big screw on the front of the throttle body, use a long screwdriver to adjust it. CW decreases idle speed, CCW increases idle speed.

For the squeal (is it a high pitched whistle?), check the routing of the hose from the oil filler cap. It is supposed to connect to a vacuum port down in the valley of the engine, below the throttle body. If it is connected directly to manifold vacuum it will make some really strange noises, ask me how I know...

That sounds right ! i thought it was a police car behind me at first, and was embarrassed as hell when i had to pull into the gas station, not only does the car draw major attention, add that High pitch whistle. .... and since you asked, how do you know about that

as far as the idle, I was playing with the screw, but I could not seem to get it moving much. the idle is to low now.

Well since you asked, I had been experimenting with the crankcase venting system and that's how I found that out. Were you able to fix the problem?

Which way did you turn the idle screw? Just a single turn should make a noticeable difference.
