Rear Lid Remote Release

Hi All:
I have recently acquired a 1985 928s Automatic, Canadian car. It seems to be in reasonable shape and runs well. My previous toy was a frame-up rebuild of a 1959 Triumph TR3A my first experience beyond replacing spark plugs.
The 928 is a whole new level of complexity, and I thought as a introduction to the intricacies or German engineering, I might start by replacing the rear lid remote operator which has ceased to function, for which the previous owner had kindly supplied a replacement drive motor: per the manual instructions (Vol. 5 , Page 55) , I duly removed the mounting bolts of the motor bracket, and gently removed the motor, expecting to have to unclip the brass-coloured operating rod, but instead the operating rod just fell out, obviously unattached at either end. With the aid of a flashlight and mirror, I was able the see the probable attachment point for the upper end of the rod, but it was very short and appeared to have no means of securing the rod, such as a cir-clip or similar.
At this point I would I would have liked to remove the lower section of the lock attached to the rear sill of the trunk, to have a better look at the attachment point, but when I removed the two attaching screw/bolts, I could only extract it a short distance before it caught on something. I am reluctant to apply any force to this at this point, and I wondered whether there is something else I need to undo, other than any wiring before it will come out?

Not sure if this area changed much over the years, and I only have docs for my flavour, but this is the diagram for a '91 - it might help, or indicate if something is broken:

have you checked the fuses?
then have you checked the pull switch?

NOTE the pull switch has a small non electric washer on its tip,
that can sometimes shatter and thus short out the switch,
as soon as its pulled the fuse blows.
If the fuses are good then the motor only runs when the knob is pulled then the motor need a 2 new transistors intalled this will fix the motor,
Their is a writeup on RL about the PN of the elex components required

To remove the motor from the attach point first remove the small aluminum cover,
Mark the position then loosen the 2 10mm bolts that hold the motor gently pry the link arm off the top portion of the lower latch drop the motor down then unplug the oval connector from the motor body

Unfortunately, the part is broken. The end of the rod should be attached to the receiver. The other end of the rod at the motor is popped off to separate the receiver from the motor. To remove the receiver, pull up and wiggle it a bit to get it out. A new receiver will come with rod attached. Remove the rod from the motor and test motor. If it does not run, check fuses. Fuse panel is under passenger side carpet.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I'm still hoping that a cir-clip will solve my problem; I'll let you know:)
