Soldering Iron Recommendations for 14 Pin

Any recommendations for buying a soldering iron to solder new wires to the 14 pin? I have one, but it is not hot enough. Thought about using a propane torch on a low setting but had reservations about that. I will be rebuilding the front engine harness with new wires.

Thanks,
Pete

I use one of these, solder the pins on before you insert them in the casing, or it ( the plastic part) will melt on you!

I used it on my main harness remake, worked perfectly.

Yeah, what Neil is showing are great Irons. I have an old school Weller Brand one. Those garbage low watt ones don't get hot enough and also take too long to get to their max temp as well.

I prefer a soldering station type with temp control and cleaning sponge. I also have a 47 watt pencil type. You want to apply heat fast and not keep the iron on the joint melting insulation. Also, avoid "cold solder connections" and use a good quality solder with flux in it for electrical connections.

PS. I would not use a propane torch with flame near any gas or potential fumes from the engine. Keep a fire extinguisher near by at all times when doing any work on your car.

I'm guilty of this as I used a torch to melt my rack bushings in the removal process. Yup, had an extinguisher real close by

I use a benzomatic torch. Rosin flux, mid sized electrical solder.

Heat the old lugs holding them with a pair of pliers, then sling them downwards to expunge old solder.

Toughest part is getting the new wires to all fit in the new (or old) 14 pin without splitting it.

I don't care if the car burns up. I like using the torch.
