928 at NJMP lemons

I talked to these guys a little bit. Euro motor with a 3 speed auto. It was actually pretty quick in a straight line. I don't think they finished. We beat them with an Escort,

Like their airdam, and is that an Escort or Merkur?

Getting beat by and Escort is pretty bad. There must have been a lot more wrong with the 928.

It's a Merkur, or a Ford Sierra if you're European like me.

yeah, It was running well for a while. We were 6th overall so 136 other cars were beat by an Escort too. I'm not sure what they were running for laptimes. I"m waiting for it to be posted.

I think that's a Merkur

I don't recall the Escort as being any kind of race car but more like a cheap low end form of transportation not even in the same class as a 928. Maybe this Escort had some big block tricked out motor put in and the 928 was all tired out with 200K miles on bad tires and shocks and in bad need of a tune up.

I see a couple of BMW E30's as well, one right on the 928's tail......plus a type 1 Rabbit / Golf.

I have owned all three of these in my time, all have been a lot of fun in their own way.

A 928 isn't in our class ENDURANCE racing , you have to turn laps, you can't be broken in the garage. The cars don't have pro level drivers so an Escort at 98% is faster than a 928 at 75%. We could actually catch it in the turns, it would only pass us on the long straights. I'm waiting for the results to be posted so I can see who had the fastest lap.

We called them Merkur XR4TIs, the name couldn't be pronounced but they are not simple escorts; they were fast (turbo charged), well engineered and good handling cars. Ford always made a better Euro product. We only got them a few years because of the name probably.
I had an Escort in High School which had a suspension layout and motor slightly more advanced than a garden tractor.

The "newer" Escorts are a bit more advanced, The one we have has a 2 liter variable valve timing Ztec motor. Its amazing, we run it at 5k+ rpm for 8 hours at day, we've miss shifted and generally completely abuse it. It runs flawlessly. It has more hp per liter than any 928 motor . Generally, the only 4 bangers that keep up are the Acura's. The 928 is the same race was less than a second faster than us on their fastest lap. We did over 250 more laps than them. (they obviously broke). The Merkur's best lap was about 6 seconds slower than our escort and they did over 100 less laps.

I know Pete, new Escorts are very nice cars as are all Ford products these days.
I was talking about back in the '80s..
The new escorts would be my choice btwn all the compact cars.

Merkur was a fast hot car. Sold terrible for some reason, then people wise to the potential grabbed them up for close to a cult following. I looked a bit for one, but the good deals were gone fast.
