Deep Thoughts...

It’s odd how you change as you mature. There was a time I thought completely different about a whole range of topics. I’ll spare you them as this is a Porsche tech forum.
After work today, I made a beeline to Kayfeild Automotive Supply to buy satin black paint for my wheels. As I pulled into the parking lot, there sat a beautiful 993. 993s are the last of the air cooled 911s and arguably the best due to their refinement. I lusted after these 911s for more than a decade and whenever close enough to one I sure as heck stopped to peek inside.
When I was in my early 20s I was into BMW 2002s. (primarily because I could afford them)
I built and painted a ‘tribute’ 2002ti with high compression and side draft Webers, headers, lowered etc.. I loved it and I drove it for many years but always secretly longing for a Porsche 911.
One day in 1998 on the way home from work I was ‘T-Boned’ very hard in the 2002 and that was the end of my 2002ti. With my insurance check I purchased my first Porsche; a Prussian Blue Metallic 1986 911 Sunroof Coupe with about 60k on the clock.
I’d just sit in it at night in the garage for like a half hour just taking in the smell. I loved it that much. I owned it for 13 years (had an SC also briefly) but I was a dedicated 911 enthusiast, if there ever was one.
Today I walked right past that 993 in the parking lot thinking about how I should be driving my 928 in this great weather. It dawned on me that I no longer cared about 911s! If you knew me then you’d get it.
I guess the Porsche Engineers were right, the 928 could replace the 911.
Going outside now to paint my wheels.-Matt

I love the 911 and derivatives, don't get me wrong. If I had one I'm sure I would love it, but I suspect I would always have in the back of my mind that others would think I bought it as some kind of status symbol, which is not what I'm about.

I expect I'm going to open a HUGE can of worms here by making a comparison to Harley Davidson. What percentage of Harley owners buy them because they are a superior product compared to those who buy them so they can belong to the culture that goes along with it and because there's a level of comfort and reassurance in buying something that thousands of others have? Not saying it's wrong, just that there's safety in numbers.

The 928 is very unique; I can't think of any car, new or old, that I would rather have in my garage. I love the car and I love the story behind it. Those who don't understand the appeal probably never will, but that's OK. Let it be our secret - I'm cool with that.

As one who has owned a Harley, there is a "culture thing" with them. I suppose the same with cars. I did like my Harley but now drive a Kawasaki! The image thing is no longer important. Now my 928 is something else. Most people have no idea what it is and I think most new 911 owners have no idea about the 928 either. Too bad for them! What a great car the 928 is!

A 928 is a car that happily waits for me in my garage until I can drive it and I enjoy driving my 928.

Howdy!

Thanks guys! Deep Thoughts by Matt made me want to say howdy and write something.

Neil - not the same here without you!

My daughters camera makes all look good. I just got back from that exact place tonight (Mt Laguna).

Mark it does look great, the polished S4 wheels look nice with the dark Prussian Blau.
I had that color Porsche for a long time, very nice color even by today's standards.

I can't wait to drive mine again, getting close.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1379811556.jpg
