1978 928 what cat an emissions ca
OK I live in CA and found a EURO 78 928 out of state. Is this the impossible dream to get this registered in the great smog state of CA?
Car is currently registered in FL and has never been registered in CA so no BAR sticker. So I ship to CA and go to register, will they allow registra tion or will vin be a no go. Nest step will be SMOG. What is needed? |

First stop is a local Calif BAR. In all honesty, a 78 Euro is not a special car. Don't buy it. The headache will not be worth it.

Unless this is a really "special" car I would advise against buying it remotely and paying $500 to $1000 to ship it to the state with more 928's than any other.
78 has the old style vin, so I don't know how savvy the DMV is at spotting a Euro. Snipped from a post by Erkka 78 928 ROW 9288100011 - 102646 2636 928 USA+CAN 9288200011 - 201139 1129 928 Japan 9288209511 - 209575 65 3830 79 928 ROW 9289100011 - 103059 3049 928 USA+CAN 9289200011 - 202285 2275 928 Japan 9289209511 - 209623 113 5437 80 928 ROW 92A08000011 - 001192 1182 928 USA+CAN 92A08100011 - 101649 1639 928 S ROW 92A08200011 - 201466 1456 4277 81 928 ROW WP0ZZZ92ZBS800011 - 800657 647 928 USA+CAN WP0JA092_BS820011 - 821668 1658 928 S ROW WP0ZZZ92ZBS840011 - 841418 1408 3713 Vin difference is 5th digit is 1 for ROW/Euro, and 2 for USA/Can. Its not so much the Euro, but the policy is that anything without proof of compliance to Calif emissions is considered only 49 state, so you need essentially to repeat the import emissions inspection process to certify compliance, ala $10k or more. OTOH if DMV doesn't notice the VIN is Euro then it would be inspected the same as a US 78 and require the same stuff. |
