Isn't it on the cam covers or even on the underside of your hood?

I just got the care a few weeks ago. it is not running at all. very week spark. Im going to start cleaning all the grounds this weekend. I also got new cap, rotor, and plugs. When I replace those, I want to be sure they are right. when I attempted to start it I got a back fire out the air box. now I don't even get that. just a week spark. after all I have been reading, I am going to start with the grounds, move to the 14 pin connector, replace the rubber fuel lines and clean the tank. once I have those things taken care of I think we can start a real diagnosis. anything else you can suggest to do before attempting to fire it up again?

Cap, rotor, and plugs are all usually fine, coil, plug wires, ignition relay, ignition switch, dirty contacts the usual suspects.
Grounds, clean fuel tank, make sure all the rubber in the fuel system is good or just replace if in doubt. Good battery and ground strap, clean and reseat all fuses and relays, check fluid levels and condition, then look at next step. Once it runs let it come up a temp a few times, then change the fluids. Don't drive without a good inspection of the brakes. |
Verify Timing by pulling off your timing covers.

if your car has a green wire to the distributor replace it if the connectors are crumbling or the insulation is cracked
its expensive but its usually the part that causes weak spark and other running issues, if your getting a backfire then you have the wires crossed. NOTE where #1 plug is to find #1 at the cap remove the cap and put the engine at TDC the rotor will point to the hash mark in the dist housing note the direction of engine rotation as well as distributor rotation use a 27mm socket to turn the crank CW while facing the engine |
This is great Stuff guys! Thank you! list in hand. Lets see what I get checked off today!

ok guys, my battery ground is lousy. someone before me replaced it with a round cable that is in poor condition. I know I need to replace it. where do I get the "Strap". Is this something I can have made? If I had a good cable made would that do the trick? I saw a few on ebay used. hesitant to buy used.

Roger has after market heavy duty flat ground straps.
|
Cost was cheap too, 20-25 bucks I want to say.
|
great I will order one up!
