Finally installed a stereo
 

Hey guys. How's everyone doing?

I finally bought and installed a aftermarket stereo. Works great! Now I just need some new speakers. I have yet to find someone with a 928 that has replaced the speakers without having to modify their panels. I've also heard suggestions to have the stock speakers rebuilt. I won't do that because it still won't be very good quality.

Can anyone suggest a speakers for an 82 and tell me the exact dimensions?

Congrats on the new tune machine! What head unit did you install?

As for speakers...You might have to modify a little bit, regardless....But, if you go to Crutchfield's website, you can enter your year, make & model, and they give you a list of speaker choices, and the sizes that best fit our cars.

I think for my rear speakers (5 1/4"), I had to do some modifying. Those were not an exact fit.

Front door speakers are 3 1/2"??? I think...... and, if I remember, I didn't have to modify those...

But, Crutchfield's website is pretty helpful with sizes needed for your specific year/make & model, and the website lets you know if they are exact-fit, or not.

Thanks, Laneyamps. It's a pioneer DEH-X8500BH. I'll upload pics maybe tomorrow. The plastic price of the console had to be cut a little bit to fit the stereo in, and the stereo is kinda hanging out a little right now because it's such a tight fit and we'll need to get to it later.

I have checked Crutchfield and they have some that they say will fit. But I check the dimensions and they're too big. I believe the door speakers are 3 1/2 but the depth is the killer. It's like 1 1/4. I've heard the rear speakers are actually easier to fit. I really want to avoid any modifications. Just can't bring myself to do that. :/

I'll check Crutchfield again though.

84 has external grilles, early cars are flat behind the panel mounts and depth is crazy small. Couple threads on Rennlist on replacements, and its not hard to DIY replace the surround. Porsche speakers used a foam edge that rots to dust, $20 and you can replace it with rubber that lasts much longer. Generally that is all that is wrong with a factory speaker.

Thanks for your input. Is that to fix the speakers? Or to improve them? They do work, they just sound terrible. It doesn't look like I really have many options however. I
On Crutchfield, they have many speakers they say will fit, with a mounting depth of 1 9/16",which is close to what I've heard the depth of the stock speakers are. Does that sound about right to you? Also do you know the depth of the rear speakers? Crutchfield doesn't show any that don't require modification. I had heard that the rear were easier to replace, but I guess not.

I've thought of Bose, as they typically make small speakers. My dad has a Bose system in his corvette, of course it doesn't work. But I can't find any Bose auto speakers on their site.

Try Partsexpress dot com. Many speakers and tons of other stuff.

On RL, I thought someone had some speakers made that fit right into the OB and with much better sound. I am almost ready to put a stereo in with speakers myself.

Hans had some made, excellent, not cheap.

Mounting depth is frequently quoted with a front of panel mounting and includes only the behind the panel distance. Early cars mount behind the panel so you have to add the depth of the speaker mounting frame.

By bad sound on factory speaker, no bass? That is due to no surround, so no seal which is required for bass. Replace the edge of the speaker between cone and frame and they work fine.

I don't know of any currently available speakers other than Hans that fit, Crutchfield or any other normal retail source, but there have been recent threads, so search and see.

Thanks guys! Sorry for delayed response been really busy with homework.

I'll look in to fixing the current speakers. Yeah they mostly just have no bass, or they rattle when there is bass. And they are tinny and they get fuzzy when I turn it up over half way.

Everything i've replaced as far as speakers was literally a drop in fit. I'm not sure how the 928's speakers came from the factory though so idk if mine was already modified.

If you want good bass and keeping it stock looking this worked for me.

That's a good idea harborman. I have a friend that's giving me a sub once I get my speakers taken care of.

I'm thinking I will go with the option of rebuilding the speakers.

Where can I aquire the parts to do this? Does this just entail replacing the foam?
