I did the front shocks on my 84 a couple of months ago.

If you take off the lower control arm you can drop it down through the upper.

You still have to jiggle it around a bit because it's a tight fit, but it worked.

Here's a link that might help:

That makes since. I loosened the upper and disconnected the tie rod end since Im replacing that too then realized it all works together. How did you support the break system and rotor when u took off the lower?

It just kind of flops around.

My post was kind of vague.... Here's what I did in a nutshell:
1. Jack the Car.
2. Remove the Tires.
3. Remove the 3 bolts at the top of the strut.
4. Remove the bolt at the lower end of the strut. ( also connected to the stabilizer bar ).
5. Removed the lower control arm
-Remove 1 bolt from the tow hook support.
-Loosen the other blot on the tow hook support.
-Remove the 2 bolts at the front of the lower arm.
-Remove the 2 bolts at the rear of the control arm.
The spindle will kind of fly around freely. Tie it off to something to move it out of the way.
6. Pull the strut through the Upper A arm. I had to jiggle it back and forth a while. I don't know why but I wasn't able to pull out the strut from the top.. Not enough clearance.
7. Change out the strut.
8. Do in reverse to reinstall. No alignment was necessary.

That's about it.

Check out this link on Rennlist.. You can buy some manuals but I think there might be a free download site ... I know there used to be.

If you have already loosened the upper a-arm bolts don't touch the bottom. Just remove the upper arm with the strut. (it's the only way I've ever done it).

I used a ratchet strap, just the hook end attached inside the engine bay and hanging over the fender and tied up the brakes with that.

Other stuff I cut up a wire coat hanger and made various supports.

Never hang anything by the hoses or wires.
