928 Alarm system
I have a 1983 928. I want to disengage or rip out the alarm system. Does anyone have advise and tech recommendation for this fix. Images are always welcome.

On a whim? - or is there a good reason...?
It's actually a good system but many PO's screw it up by messing with it (or at least by not fixing simple things wrong with it). Most owners have no idea how it is really supposed to work... If operating correctly it is more reliable than most aftermarket retrofit versions Alan |
On my 79 I just unplugged and removed the module. The exciter wire for the alt went through it so I just had to jump that and everything ran normal.

I think on an '83 all you need to do is to unplug CE plug Z (and leave unplugged) then link Central Electric pins Z1 & Z6 with a short jumper. The pin numbers are embosssed (very tiny) - on the CE panel connector. Pretty easy this way & easily reversible.

Yes. Up to and including your year, 83. NOT 84. (inserting this comment to prevent a future searcher from making a stupid error)

do all these cars have an alarm system or was it an option ?
|
Option. Most seem to have it. If not, there will be a white plastic jumper plug inserted in the CE panel at the Z position.
(84 is the only one I've actually seen, on a customer car.) |
For an '84 you'd need to similarly unplug Plug Z - but jumper Z4 to Z6 instead.
On 1985 & up there is no longer a plug Z and the alarm connections vary by year. Removing the alarm is no longer a simple matter of unplugging one plug on the CE panel - you have to actually unplug the alarm module - which is usually pretty burried. Most USA cars had alarms - for ROW cars it was usually an option, certain countries (e.g. UK) frequently fitted after-market alarm systems (at the dealer) rather than the factory system (presumably there was a good reason for this - regs etc.) The factory wiring should be there either way and this would make install much easier. Factory alarm is easy to see, the key for the door will be a long one, metal "blade" portion 55mm vs non alarm 45mm.
Aftermarket alarms can be a ROYAL PITA both in operation and removal. Lot I bought my parts car from spent months trying to get the car started without success. |
