Power Antenna Control 1980 928 US
1980 US Model :
Just where is the Power Antenna Control at ? my Radio ( works OK ) is a Sony so I expect that's a after market installed radio . It seems to have a push / pull on the Left hand knob that works the volume and the turning On / Off of the radio . it Feels like that Volume Control knob when pulled and pushed in and out rather then " Turned " Right or Left should Power the Antenna up and down ? Perhaps I have it all wrong and the Control is elsewhere ? I have a Extra Power Antenna from another 928 that I want to instal as mine has a partly broken Antenna Shaft however the radio works but reception is weak as shaft is only about 12 inches long lol |

All I've seen have been automatic, turn on, it goes up.
When the radio is tuned on there is a signal output to raise the antenna. Very annoying actually with modern head units when you rarely listen to the radio using the CD etc instead. |

The blue wire for antenna (or amplifier) control always originates from the head unit in stock configs.
You could instead use an accessory feed (X) - then the antenna would be up the whole time the car is on. Alan

Thanks All
![]() I Pulled the Pass side Consul Panel to inspect the wiring . I see several Blue wires so not sure what one to inspect . So I pulled the rear tire and mud flap to get to the Antenna . I pulled the wiring hook up and discovered it has power all the time going to it . I installed my used ( $20 ) " Antenna control " and tried it . with power on it went up about 1 inch so i pulled on it lightly and up it went . Cleaned all the Crud off it and lucubrated it with WD 40 and ran it up and down then wiped it down . So How it works ? : Correct turn on key and up it well go if radio is on . Key on but Radio off down it go's . Radio Off > Key On Down it stays until you turn Radio on . I bought a few Used parts from Renegade Hybrids in Las vegas and very good prices Renegade Hybrids they Convert 928's to convert them to Chevy / 928's They seemed to get upset when I asked why ? as the Porsche motor gives plenty of power same as the Chevy and they said because the Chevy motor is lighter ? I disputed this after searching the net and found them to be about the same weight . Perhaps I am, wrong about this weight issue however the perfect set (4) of 15" Phone Dial wheels for $100 and the Antenna for $20 prior to the Why Convert Conversation was ok with me . Personally I Might add that I certainly would never convert my or any 928 to Chevy power unless someone paid me about $25 K or more to play poker with lol. There are usually 3 connections: 1 is a ground - sometimes just an implicit ground from the mounting ring (but usually also wired) then 2 power connections 1 permanent power for the parking into the retracted state and one to trigger it going up and down (the blue wire).
Only reasons I've ever seen noted for a chevy conversion is the idea that it's cheaper to buy/fix/maintain than a Porsche engine with issues - also to a lesser degree its cheaper to do performance upgrades due to the competitive large aftermarket for these engines (no debate there). Usually the conversions themselves are expensive, time consuming and rarely completed fully to stock like (or better) driveability results. The valuation of a chevy converted car is very questionable though - since so few have been done well its hard to gauge. Since many folks value total originality/authenticity in their Porsches its hard to see it not diminishing eventual sales opportunities significantly - unless the car was a mess anyway. Alan

One of these days I need to get around to installing a small hidden by-pass switch. I have a Kenwood head unit which of course raises the antenna as soon as I power on the stereo. I mostly listen to my music off a USB thumb drive and rarely the tuner. Wish it had one trigger wire for the amp and another for the antenna, but only when the tuner is selected.
It wouldn't be a big deal, except the 928 antenna is too damn tall. It looks so out of place that it automatically draws attention and dates a car that would otherwise be hard guess if it was 3 years old or 30 years old. Didn't Porsche offer ShortWave and LongWave on the early models? That might explain why it needed to be so tall.

what about plugging the hole or cutting the stock one off underneath to save weight and keep original antenna down look (if it doesnt' work of course) and running one of those little shark fins on the back hatch that new cars have on them. aren't those antennas?
I was just thinking about that the other day because I can't get mine to work either. shouldn't a shark have a little shark fin ![]() I like the rubber ducky though Dan, looks modern.

I think the wires in the rear defrost might work ok as an antenna too, in a typical metro high density channel situation.
