4.5 L Auto question

Is it normal not to be able to peel out, when you nail it on drive with 4.5 auto. I have some tuning to do, my low and high are good but something is up on med range if I'm gunning it. If I'm cruising and accelerating slowly it's fine but not if I floor it - I get a slight vibration and hinders faster increase. I notice that my launch/take off drags until 2000 rpms and then comes alive. Is there an adjustment for that, I know there's one for the shifting and was wondering about the take off or is this normal. Thanks

Do you have factory exhaust?

I'll try it on the weekend. I guess by your answer these cars start on 2nd?

soltino 12-09-2014 02:34 PM

Who's on 1st.

The 3 speed auto starts off in first gear, as do the earlier 4 speeds. Later, in 32V cars, the car will start off in 2nd gear unless floored or the shift lever is pulled all the way back......

Unless the cable is mal-adjusted.

so it's taking off on 1st for sure, maybe the lack in power has to do with tuning. I have to buy the green wire and a coil to see what difference I get in power. so far injectors are cleaned and like new, new spark plugs, new wires, timing belt and advanced it a hair over. Sounds and starts on a dime. But when I need power she hesitates. I need to check my air/fuel mix too.

Start with the Timing : 928's can have the Timing jacked way up and they just run better and better . Just don't set so hi you get spark knock .
Quite ofter if the Timing Belt is worn / Off a notch the car well run like S*** until you replace it
this is not a simple job .

Check the vacuum lines, make sure the distributor is hooked up to the correct port on the throttle body.

Check the throttle cable is not too loose.
Check the throttle position switches are correct for idle, and WOT.
Good tires and dry pavement and a 4.5L auto will not be providing excitement off the line anyway.

So I got the Babe run gooood with no vibrating issues but now (I think) because it's advanced some on idle it will go to 1150 maybe 1200 and drop to 800 rpms and keep repeating that cycle. How can I keep it idling smooth without retarding her back

I can help you with your 'peel out' problem. Just choose from the following:

a) sell your 928 and get a car that has a carb with attached air breather. You can flip the air breather lid and 'Bob's your uncle'.

b) come back in a few years

c) accept my offer of $1500 to give the car a good home.

thanks but NO thx. I got her running good, tuned her some more and fixed the problem. I can deal with no peel out with the mid and high that the car is giving me now. It's accelerating. The advice helped guyz- got me to check on things and pin point the problem. thx

Danglerb 12-16-2014 08:02 PM

So what was the problem?

928 Bro 12-16-2014 08:58 PM

Idle was a little to high and I guess the timing advance would kick in but than try to regulate it back down and the main and somewhat dum of me to miss is that my wire for cylinder 1 and 2 were not in all the way, they would about a 1/4 of an inch from clicking in. that's why if I was cruising it was not to noticeable but if I needed power it hesitated. thx
