Noise in 928S Torque Tube or Transaxle
I'm hearing a rotational whirring noise in my '83 928S that happens only in neutral with my foot off the clutch. Noise stops when I depress the clutch pedal. I cant hear it when it is in gear driving (if it is still there then its getting drowned out by road noise ). I've heard this may be a Torque Tube bearing or could be in the Transaxle itself? Any easy way to tell which?

put the car on a lift then run it with a hose placed in your ear listen for the spot where the noise is loudest.
NOTE you will have to remove the central heat shield and possibly the exhaust to listen to the TT

I rarely disagree with Stan, but my answer is no there is no sure way short of pulling and inspecting to know the source, and it could easily be both TT and input bearing on the transaxle. The problem is the TT is a big hollow tube and the bearings are isolated with rubber holders.
Two experienced mechanics listened to mine on a lift, and eventually clutch, TT, and transaxle all replaced. Also its a noise that needs fixing, as a TT bearing issue can cause trouble to the trans bearing etc. |
