Wiring Diagrams help

Going through wiring diagrams to track down an electrical problem. Coming across a feature I don't understand: there are, throughout the diagrams, square boxes with a number inside them (1-8) which are called "welding points". Can anyone explain what these represent?

I do not have an '88 but...

Can you upload a picture of the diagram and/or describe the function/item you have issue with?

some joins are where wires are soldered/welded together along the run between point A to B to C...
