'79 S for sale in San Antonio – Help Researching

Hey guys,

I'm new to the car world, so I don't know if a 928 is the smartest choice for my first 'extra' car – but it might be really fun, and this seems like a decent deal. It's listed at 6k but I'd try to get it for ~ 5.

1979 Porsche 928 S reduced price

I've been told the nice ladies and gents here who live in the area of a listing are sometimes willing to scope it out, or even drive the car. Before we get to that step, am I setting myself up for a ridiculous nightmare of wiring and general Porsche difficulty?

At the same time, it seems like 928 values are going up and could get pulled up even more with the rest of the Porsches, so that's enticing too. Any advice would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!

::eck Stripe::: Unless you think it's the Bee's knees, and really dig it, include the price of having the car painted into your offer.

The present owner can have a lot to do with what kind of car is sold here. I see it has a short-shift and other goodies, and a daily driver is good in my book; the interior looks pretty good, so might have spent time living in a garage. Owner might be someone who likes to wrench and has been keeping up on the maintenance, look to see if there's some record of mechanical history. Price?

If it's in really great mechanical shape, I can see it, but if you're going to have to put in a lot of extra mechanical work, you can still find other running examples of that vintage for less.

Hello Logan
You can check out the different model and engine specs here:
928 Engine Types

It may be a small thing to you but adding a spoiler to a 79 does not make it a "S" model.

I think the car looks awesome. Part of the beauty of the 78-79 is the simplicity. That simplicity has been..., uh, altered on the one offered for sale. The wing and the stripe take a way from the simple design of the OB. If Bling is your thing.... this one might be a fun car to own.

I'd say the $5K you suggest is all the money this car will ever be worth, at least for a long, long time. This is not an investment grade sample. It needs a complete paint job and the rear S4 spoiler deleted. It also looks like the seats were re-done (poorly) at some point, and the center consol has been hacked pretty good to put in an aftermarket radio. It also has an after market short shifter installed. Lastly, no engine pictures, but I can only imagine what it looks like. There is no way I believe the 74K miles on it. I'd bet the speedometer stopped working a long time ago (a very common issue with 928's). Beware of the seller too - he is either selling because wifey said so (typical BS statement), or he is moving, or he really wants a boat, truck or SUV (which is wholly inconsistent with the first two things).
You would want to get a really good ppi first (pre-purchase inspection). There may be tons of deferred maintanence on it. The most expensive Porsche is always the cheapest to buy. For $5K, it could turn out to be a fun driver, but I would not get it unless a ppi came back clean.
