It works! .....sort of
 

Started my 928 engine yesterday evening after a complete rebuild that has kept me awake nights for the past three years. It has only been run for a total of about 15 minutes in the last 18 years, so this is a big step. We had tried to start it a couple of times before this past week but had some fuel leaks to address, mainly from worn injector seals and me not tightening connections completely.

So, she roared into life and seemed to run fine but I only let it run for about 30 seconds before shutting it off to check again for leaks etc. When I went to start it again it just wasn't interested; sounded like it wanted to fire but died immediately. Then I got a pop out of the top of the engine that actually blew the right-side intake box off the rubber sleeves - it had not been tightened completely.

Question: I do not have many of the [very] small diameter vacuum / pressure lines hooked-up; by small diameter, I mean the ones that are about the same size as the ink tube in a disposable pen. Could this affect fuel flow? Is it critical to have these lines connected to run the engine? I appreciate it might not perform at its best without these lines connected but would you expect it not to run at all?

Short answers: Yes, yes, and maybe not.

Check your fuel pressure dampener for internal leaks. You got pooling fuel/fumes in your intake which ignited and blew your intake apart. Those are typical from damper issues.

I don't know your MY well. Some of those small lines are for non essential controls.

However, the 928 is sensitive to having complete configuration...everything in order: fasteners/bolts/nuts secure at or close to spec, CEP clean (removed corrosion), vacuum lines connected, fuel lines with proper HP fasteners/clamps. I am sure there are a few items that can be out of spec.

Fix the little hoses, they do all sorts of things including one of them going to ign brain for timing the spark.
