Oil viscosity

Good day everyone, hope this message finds you well!
I am looking to find the correct oil for a
1992 Carrera RS here in Houston.
Do I go with Mobile 1 15w-50?
It gets hot here in H-town!
Not sure what is in there now BUT low
and need to get some oil in her!!
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
thanks, Tom

Not sure whats in there, time for oil change!

Also make sure you read the oil level with car at temperature , on level ground, in between the marks on the dipstick is good, you dont want it at the top mark

Mobil 1 15/50 is fine, not everyone uses it but its readily available and honestly I havent heard anything bad about it in use with our cars..

Thanks 964Targa!
A question. My brother added a quart and
the oil gauge needle is pegged at the top.
In trying to read the dipstick, it is tough, ie...
can’t really see where the oil is. Looks to be over
the first “v” in the stick BUT really can’t tell much above
that. With the needle pegged I worry about
Overfill BUT the stick does not look
Overly oil’d.
Any thoughts?
Afraid to drive if “over-filled”
Yes, another OCD Porsche guy!!
thanks, Tom

M1 15w-50 is perfect for your use

To see the level on the dipstick place it on a paper towel, the oil level will show on the towel

Best to run low ie just above minimum when you are at high revs a lot, for normal driving it won't make much difference. What happens when there is an overly ample supply of oil in the system is that it migrates into the intake manifold, more revs = more migrating oil

Please do not go with 0-30w/ 0-40w. I have tried them on my 92 964 then my engine
oil light went off each time at stop sign but not at any speed. When I changed back to 15-50w everything been good as normal.

And, when you check it, the oil should be at full operating temperature. You want to be sure that the car is warm enough that the thermostat is open and all the oil in the system (something like 13 quarts total) has been warmed up. It's amazing how much the oil expands. If you check it and add oil when the oil is still cool, you can easily be over the maximum on a long journey when the whole system gets up to temperature. And, over filling the oil is something you do not want to do!

I always wondered if my car had high oil consumption. I have a 993 in a 1985. The oil level seems just above the bottom mark. I”be added a quart and brought it halfway between the marks, and it always ends up just above the bottom mark. If I don’t add oil, the level stays just above the lower mark no matter how many miles I drive,

I don’t think visccity has anything to do with it. But, after looking at this and other posts, thinking about switching to 15w50 from 10w30.

I use Mobil 1 15w-50 but I don’t have cat converter.

Just changed my oil and used 2 liters of Motul 300V Ester-core based 20W-60 racing oil to my 912. You're probably fine with whatever you used if it's a daily driver, but if it's a weekend cruiser, the esters in 300V are known to coat engine parts to minimize wear during "cold" starts. Ester-based oils withstand extreme temp & pressure (they're used in turbines and jet engines), reduce friction & wear, decrease consumption, and increase fuel efficiency compared to synthetics & fossil-based oils. Team Porsche racing adopted Motul Ester Core 300V - but it's not cheap!
