964 and 993 Front LCA Interchangeability
Question for the group.
**I thought there was a thread out there that covered this topic, but I couldn't find it in a search for some reason. If I missed the link, please let me know! ** I bought what were supposed to be OEM 964 front LCA's. When they showed up they had a 993 part numbers. I was under the impression that 993 were not directly interchangeable with 964 because of a ball joint mounting stud, or something. What were the differences? I'm trying to find out if there was a mistake with the seller and if what I have will indeed work. They are completely stripped to the casting and refinished and will need studs, bushings, everything, so if it's something minor and the geometry is the same, I will work with them. Any information would be appreciated. THANKS! |
A closer look shows that I have a left 993 LCA and a right 964 LCA. They appear to be virtually identical, except the 993 is slightly beefier. Stud holes are the same size as well. Apparently these were on the same car. Very strange.

Physically, the arms are of the same size & interchangeable. But as you've found, the 993 balljoint stud is larger.

So it seems the 964 control arm has been drilled out to accept the larger stud for the 993 ball joint. So then I would assume I would have to use 993 ball joints. Will 993 ball joints work with the 964 uprights? If the 993 ball joints will work with the 964 uprights, it seems my best option is to sell the unmodified 993 LCA, buy another left side 964 LCA and match it to the modified right side 964 LCA. Or maybe I'm just screwed. HA |
