Drilled my airbox...
For a whopping $35 I found a stock 993 airbox lid on eBay. I spent $4 on the 1.5" cut-out drill bit and went to town. Sat. I cleaned and re-oiled the K&N filter, installed drilled lid and went for a test drive. It's quite nice. Below 4k it sounds the same. Between 4k-5k it gets a little louder and after 5k it roars like a lion. Not sure how this will be for long trips, but on the short blasts, it's a lot of fun - and it was cheap too!

No - I'm way too impatient for that. I just used a 1.5" bit and drilled I think 10-12 holes on the side pointing toward the front of the car, used sanpaper to deburr the holes and that was it. Very simple, very easy.

Awwh,
Rich don't tell me you believe all that K&N propaganda about it being superior flow and all that. Bruce Anderson has checked their claims of HP gains on the dyno and the results show the factory paper element to be just as good flow wise and definitely protects against dust better. The holes are suppose to gain 8HP and that's free HP at low costs. So that proves the previous assumption. Tom |

Tom, K&N came with the car. I didn't pay for it. It's a lot easier to clean and re-oil once in a while than to pay $40 for a new Mahle air filter every oil change. I refuse to spend a dime on upping HP. Track time and suspension are much more important.

Rich,
True but I always throw out the K&N and go back to factory tried and tested OEM filters that are more convenient to use (no messy cleaning and oiling). Also is a $12000 engine worth saving $40/change for in terms of risk/cost benefit analysis. I think not. |

The K&N debate will never die. I don't keep it for HP. I will clean and re-oil very regularly. I'll probably rebuild my engine in the next two yrs. too, as oil consumption is at 1 qt. per 1500 miles - not great for only 36k miles on the clock.

we saw 7hp gains for removing the air box lid. depending on the type of air box,we have seen subtle gains for the KN, but not conclusive enough to prove it better or worse than the factory filter. however, since it is so close, re-useability seems to be the main reason to change to KN. its a great air box design on our 911s and 928. I tried a cone filter with an integral bell mouthed inlet feeding the 3.5" stock MAF and lost 5hp. put the stock air box back on and gained it right back. Porsche really did their homework. However, when the air box is vented, the gains are in the 5-7hp range consistantly
