993 motorsound airbox

so what's the deal with the 993 factory motorsound airbox. it looks the same as a regular airbox, but with about 40 holes drilled in it! I see that FabSpeed is selling a hot rod air box cover that is mostly just a factory piece with 90% of the center cut out.
what are you guys running on your 993s?
Cheers.
(and yes, i'm new here, watch out!)

you are correct in your assesment of the motorsound airbox. (it has a chrome snorkel as well as the holes)
you get more sound at/near wide open throttle....kinda like when you used to flip the air-cleaner lid on your dad's '71 Pontiac
a used motorsound airbox is about $150 used, and i think about $200 new.
you can easily drill out your original airbox lid, or get a used one (usually about $35 on ebay) and drill it out. If you remove your airbox lid and look at the inside, you should see faint outlines of the hole pattern...like a casting flash. although,i have read that some airbox lids do not have this visible pattern.
i saw a diagram for the holes somewhere on the internet...i'll see if i can find it for you. if not, i can make a template for you. if i remember correctly, the cad diagram was for fewer, but larger holes.

the open fabspeed cover is supposedly on the loud side. i think pelicanite 'motion' has one on his cab....maybe he will read this and give you an opinion.

I actually just priced a motorsound kit for a client, the air box is not available as a seperate part, but the exhaust tips are. The whole kit is about $500 before any discounts.

hi Britwrench Mark. I have seen just the motorsound airbox lid advertised by itself in some dealer ads in Excellence in the past; but, as you say, it doesn't show up in the PET as a seperate part number.
I have dealt with Gert in Belgium before for parts not readily available from Pelican; he has the motorsound airbox lid for a good price: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p93016.htm .. about $120 plus shipping from Europe.
ps Mark, did you ever get the 1980 SC service info booklet reprint??
Kyle, take the lid off and look closely on the inside after cleaning it.

Max, thanks for the info on that, my client only needs the cover so that will work out great.

I did get the info booklet thanks, I thought I PM'd a thank you, but it appears I didn't. Thank you for the time and effort in doing that.

Max, will do!
Mark, i say 3 motorsound airboxs on Ebay recently. you could probably pick up the entire airbox on Ebay for about the same as what you'd pay retail for just the cover. just my 2 cents.
Kyle.

I sold Motion his Fabspeed lid and I thought it was too loud. I recently picked up a spare stock lid on eBay for $35, Dremeled it myself and it sounds VERY nice. Mind you, I also have Fabspeed MaxFlows. But I'd never spend the money on a Motorsound lid. DIY is so much cheaper and more satisfying.
