High Mileage 964 - Do you have one -

how long will a 964 go before requiring a engine rebuild?

I have seen some on the market with as much as 300,000+ miles on them... any opinions?

Any high mileage porsche owners out there??

I've got a 90 C4 with 182,000 on it. It's oil consumption is 1qt per 1300 miles. Runs strong. No funny noises and the amount of filings in the drain magnet have not changed since 60,000 miles. The valves are solid and clean. I'll probably do a rebuild at 200,000 just to celebrate its sweet 16 and to replace the cylinder base o-rings which have been dripping since 50,000.

colo964 and NPS ...
I see you both have 90's. Did your cars have the cylinder head recall/update performed on them or are they still factory heads as far as you know?

Curious because I'm looking into a low-mile 90 C4 that I hope to put many many miles on.

I'm not sure. I am the third owner and didn't get much paperwork on its history. All I knew is it ran well and looked good, so I bought it.

Good luck with finding a low mileage 964, but any car in good condition will be fun to drive and own (even if you do have to fix a thing or two every so often). There is no substitute for an understanding of your machine.

Most 1990 964's have had the recall completed or have been updated by now. An inspection will show if there is evidence of oil seepage, if not or very minor, it's been taken care of under recall or is a non issue.

THe 964 is a tough motor and with regular maintenance and oil changes they can be very reliable high mileage machines.

I have a '91 C4 Targa with 132,000 miles which seems low compared to some. But it runs great and I love driving it. I'm putting a clutch in it now and replacing a few seals just for fun. It will be for sale after the clutch job is complete.

The 964's are very reliable. I have a '90 C4 Cab with 188K miles on the original engine. No updates for the cylinder/head seals. It drips a bit but most (all?) is coming from the main seal. I will fix it when I replace the clutch. In the mean time, I'm driving and having fun.
