Sanity check!

Well after 16 years of being away from Porsches, (due to my wifes ceaseless quest for practicality) car payments were timing out, the kids growing up a bit and the wife in a moment of weakness finally gave me the go to purchase a 911 albeit on a very tight budget.

I knew the window of opportunity would be small so I jumped on an '84 Carrera without the luxury of taking my time to get re-acquainted with the marque. So far I think I was lucky. Fortunately, it's not my daily driver.

Now is when it gets interesting and appropriate to this forum. You see the wife is up for a new car too. At first we considered 7 and 5 series BMW's but she really didn't want to go over 25K and since we have a Bonneville for the family she was open to something sportier as well.

Can women have a mid-life crisis? Or was my the constant banter about my '84 finally getting thru?

I stumbled upon a '91 C2 Targa with a Trip (the wife likes the idea of a Targa and we live in Fl) with 53K miles for $23K relatively local to me so I can have a PPI done by a shop I know and trust. This car will be her daily driver (about 35 miles per day).

I think I've researched all the significant issues and potential problems thanks to the forum.
In talking with seller there is an oil leak that he describes as about a teaspoon over night. He believes it's valve cover related and not a cylinder head /case issue but however it comes out he says he will have it fixed by MY shop.

So wish me luck and hopefully things will work out well. Somehow though I think she will be getting the best part of the deal.

So am I crazy?

Doesn't look bad...

Have them fax me the records.

BTW, your gas tank door is finished - looks great

Thanks Mike,

I will need to use the guys in Pompano for the PPI. In all honesty I feel more comfortable with you guys because they did not diagnose the shifter bushings on my '84. If I do decide to get it It comes straight to you this time for an oil change and whatever else you guys feel I should have done. I'll get the records on Monday or Tuesday and fax them to you. Good idea. Have a good holiday and are you guys open on Friday to pick up the fuel filler door?

Yep, we'll be there on Friday.

The big thing to look for is regular maintenance - 964's require valve adjustments every 15K. the 964 also has power steering which makes adjusting the valves or replacing sparkplugs a real pain. (3 - 4 hours to change the plugs, about the same to adjust the valves.

This will result in a big bill - It would be nice for you if this was done recently on the car.

Side cupholders (aftermarket). Whether that raises or lowers the price depends on your point of view.
