Leaking rear transmision seal - 993
 

Is it possible to replace gasket sealing the rear of the transmission to the engine without dropping the engine ? Or can a transmission for a 1995 993 be removed from the car without the drop of the engine ? I have a leaking rear seal. Front transmission seal is dry. Leak at rear appeasrs to be from bottom of the mating surface and not from the sides, so leak is medium...........any advice on this. or has anyone ever had a similar procedure done ? Any info would be great or opinions..........I think I am looking at a grand and a half to fix minimum. Car doesn't need a new clutch or synchros, so just a gasket repair for the time in.................

There is no seal or gasket between the transmission and the engine. It is a dry area ... hopefully, as the clutch is in there :)
Chances are you have a leaking rear main seal on the engine. Also sometimes referred to as the flywheel seal. The oil would drip down to the bottom of the bellhousing and leak through the parting line (engine and trans. bellhousing.
As I understand, the transmission alone can be removed if the car is not a AWD model (C4,C4S, Turbo) Getting things lined up when reinstalling is supposedly a little tricky, so many DIYers do an engine drop instead.

I dropped the tranny alone because an engine drop requires realignment of the rear suspension. It's time consuming but can be done. The hardest parts are getting to the starter motor bolts and getting the clutch fork shaft back in. Space is tight, but it's doable.
