Hot and Smelly 993 C2

I have had my a 993 for about two years now, it has recently started to smell of burning rubber. The smell is outside and very strong after a long run and comes from the nearside rear quarter (RHD UK car) it seems to be coming from behind the rear wheel. There is also a very large build up of heat in the area (once there was a small amount of smoke coming from under the wheel arch). Nothing is loose, all the belts are OK and not slipping, the tyre is not rubbing on anything and the hub does not appear to be getting overly hot.
Anyone ever had this before?
I have (assumed to be a coincidence?) just had a new set of tyres fitted (N2 rated) so I first assumed it was these, but they are not getting hot so I do not think this is the source of the smell and heat.
Should I be worried?

Thanks!
Peter

Sounds like oil leaking from the valve covers onto the heat exchangers. This is quite common, and replacing the valve cover gaskets is no big deal.

There is a normal amount of heat build-up in this area, as this is where the oil tank is located. I can't tell if yours is excessive or not. If there is oil on the heat exchangers, this would be the source of the smoke.

Could well be burning oil instead of rubber and it would explain all of the symptoms especially the smoke. It was only recently serviced so I’ll check the oil level and have a look around that side of things.

Many thanks for the advice, I’ll post what I find!

Thumbs up

Turned out to be oil “seeping” onto the exhaust from the rocker cover. The mechanic was initially confused as it smelt like rubber to him too. He recons that as there was only a minor seep, as opposed to an oil leek, that the smell was different from that normal associated with a problem here.

Worth noting that mine was the 3rd 993 the garage had with that problem that week, so it must be quite common? Only took an hour to fix, cheap as chips, and the smell has gone.

Worth noting for anyone else who has similar problems.

Thanks,

Peter
