Porsche Crest Fuel Gauge

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for fuel level indicator circuit? I am trying to diagnose my fuel gauge problem. I was driving my 91 C2 last week and everything was fine until I stopped for some coffee. I returned to my car and the fuel light was on and the fuel level was registered at zero and there was at least 3/4 of a tank of gas. This was further confirmed two blocks later, the fuel level indicator returned to 3/4 but the fuel light stayed on. Not much later, the level indicator went back down to zero and never returned.

Is there any way to tell, if the fuel level sensor in tank has gone south, the fuel gauge is shorted out, or other electrical probelms within the circuit?

Any help will be appreciated.

Most likely, your fule level sender has gone south. Essentially, there is a float in the sender that runs on 2 wires The variable resistance as the float moves alond these wires is what causes the gauge to fluctuate. at a preset point, the float will trigger the low fuel light. Over time, the wires get corroded and things tend to stick.

You can double check the electrical connections on teh back of your fuel gauge, but your problem most likely resides in the sender.
