If the stars are "anti-squeal", they must not be working. Are they necessary?

Many just discard them, they are not necessary. If you separate them from the ppads you can try to reinstall but should buy new ones.

I will try the pads without them. Thanks! do most people find that they help with squeaky brakes? The factory must have thought so.

do you have experience with filing pad edges to reduce squeal?

I don't use anything more than the pad. Just slide them in and remember that the first time you use the brakes it may take a bit to re-extend the pistons. Just pump the pedal once or twice before driving.
