Re: better mileage w/ diesel

I also, posted this on the main board and very worried I may have causwd serious damage.

I was filling up my 85 cab w/ a 993 3.6 and it was dark and there were 4 hoses and I'm used to grabing the one to the farthest right. It's usually the 92 or 93 octane premium. So, I shouldn't have to mention what I did but. Not only do I feel embarrsed discussing it but, feel that this may to the stupidest things thread.

Fortunatelly, I only pumped 4.8 gal. when I realized what I'd done and called someone who new more about Porsches' than I. He said that if I topped of the tank w/ premium that the car may run poorly and I should make it home and that eventhough, it wasn't good for the car I should be OK. BTW, I was a long way from home w/ no tools and after all the shops had closed.

It was a long drive w/ 25% diesel in the fuel tank, while watching the fuel gauge, hoping to burn off the bad gas and add more high octane, and carefully listening to the engine for signs of knocking or rough runnig, and failure. But, the car ran great. It never knocked, missed, or sputtered, no mater what gear it was in or if I was driving on a flat stretch or up a hill. Watching the fuel gauge constantly made miles and minutes stretch on into eternity.
The car got such good fuel economy on diesel, unbeleiveable.

Well, I have filled up twice since w/ good fuel and the car stil runs great. I'm really hoping that no damage was done that might not show up in the future because of my stupidity.

Still not really sure that everything is going to be OK. So, tell me am I OK or what could be the worst $$$problem ?

BTW, it was amazing I got just over 20mpg w/ diesel...still can't believe it.

Gary

My 993 gets 23-24mpg during mostly highway driving. Are you amazed that you got 20mpg period or that you got 20mpg with 25% diesel?.

This was only yhe second time that I'd kept track of the mileage since owning the car, and I was amazed that it got 20 mpg on 25% diesel. On a trip, shortly after purchasing the car it got almost 28 mpg.

BTW, I see your from the Lake Tahoe area. I vacation out there 2-3 times/year. I love the area and atmosphere out there, and almost scored some property in S. Tahoe w/ a boat slip around Xmas. I went looking at property on on of the days it rained over Xmas instead of skiing. hope to be out there in late October/early November.

Someday, hope to drive my car to Tahoe.

Yeah, lots of good roads in the area. When I am really enjoying my car on the Tahoe area roads, I only get about 15-16mpg. It seems that mileage is inversely proportional to fun.

Re: the Diesel fuel thing, there is a certain amount of protection the car provides itself by retarding the timing. Others on the board could probably give you a much better / detailed explanation. I think your car will be fine if it isn't experiencing any problems by now. Consider yourself lucky and chalk it up to experience.
