My 1991 air-conditioned C2 Tiptronic Cab is at the dealer. The air conditioning mostly blows hot air but every once in a while the cooling seems OK. The dealer says it is a bad air temp sensor in the a/c control unit (AKA climate control head) and says I need a new control unit at $1700 (gag) + $220 labor. Has anyone had this problem and had any luck just replacing the sensor or finding a source for aftermarket repair, replacement or rebuild of the climate control head?

I don't know much about A/C systems, but if you want some cheaper (used) parts, try your local race shops. Lots of folks pull the A/C out when building a race car.

The CCU (Climate Control Unit) will break. You can find used units for far less than that - and it's not hard to replace yourself.
You might want to check here: http://www.systemsc.com/products.htm for troubleshooting and repair of the CCU.
