Odd shifting problem

This issue started after the first extended highway trip with my 1995 993. After driving off of I-95 after 300+ miles in 6th gear, I coasted to a stop with the car in neutral on an off-ramp. The transmission would not allow me to enter the 1-2 gear shift gate. After running the gear selector into 3d gear, I was able to pass the gate and select 1st.
This seems to be a common occurrence now, anytime I use 5th or 6th, I must shift into 3d or 4th before gaining access past the 1-2 shift gate. The shifting into 3-4 can be done with the clutch fully in or out, does not seem to make a difference. Any ideas?
