964 valve cover replacement
hello,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain what the process for replacing the valve covers on a 1991 964 is? I know for a fact that the lower valve covers are leaking, but I am hesitant about going in to replace them on my own if the engine must to be taken out to complete. I have new valve covers and gaskets ready for installation, but since this is my first Porsche, I really don"t want to mess something up. I appreciate any advice that is provided. Thanks. |

You could buy/borrow a Bentley manual? I'm not familiar with the 964, but dropping the engine is not necessary to remove and replace the valve covers. However, you would need to jack the car up and place it on 4 jack stands extended at least 22 inches above the floor in order to remove the two exhaust valve covers. And if you get that far, you might as well adjust all the valves. And before you remove the exhaust valve covers, its also necessary to drain the oil out of the engine dry sump. Dive right in, but only after you are confidently familiar with the procedure.

Agree, plus, note that with the 964 it depends on the car. Original cars all have engine cladding. You will have to remove it (want to anyway, for heat). This requires removing the cat on the left, and the muffler on the right. Bypass that one anyway while you're at it.

And don't permanently remove the side heat shielding if you still have a catalytic converter or secondary muffler otherwise you will reduce the life of your lower ignition wires and plug connectors.
