tiptronic torque converter/starter ring gear

My 91 964 C2 Tiptronic just broke the starter ring gear loose from the torque converter. Anyone know how to reset/repair this? The old ring gear seems to be undamaged, just loose.

The big question here is WHY.

Hoo boy, this is a toughie.

IF you are lucky and have access to a lift (do NOT try this on jackstands!)

IF you can get the starter off, you can go in through the starter hole and rotate the engine to each bolt and tighten it up - or remove a bolt, apply loctite blue, and replace each one.

If memory serves, there are 8 bolts.

Otherwise, sorry, the engine and tranny are coming out to fix.

Thanks for the reply..
I've since pulled the motor out (been wanting to anyway), and discovered that the ring gear is mounted to the torque converter housing by heating the gear and installing while hot, apparently. There are no bolt holes, spot weldings, swedgings, anything that I could find. Appears that I'm going to have to replace the torque converter, unless someone has a way of fixing this? The 8 bolts that you are thinking of are for the converter to flex plate mount, BTW..

Oh hell, you are correct.

I stand corrected.
