964C2 ABS alarm! and speedmeter stopped?

Hello to all,

Last Sunday, I changed proportioning valve of my 964C2('92) from an original for the mechanical variable type of Willwood.
After exchange, I bred the rear brake circuit enough, and the brake pedal travel was restored.
My C2 showed fine brake performance in a test drive. The ABS operated normally,too.

Monday morning, I started C2's engine and an alarm tone sounded suddenly! And the ABS warning lamp turned on.

I stopped engine, cut the battery and reconnected, but after all an alarm tone and a warning lamp operated again.
I checked the fuse box, and the ABS fuse did not cut...
I started engine again, and go to test drive carefully. The mechanical performance of brakes did not have any problem, but naturally ABS did not operate.
Pressure to rear brakes acted normally, and I could feel the effect of variable p-valve from behavior of wheels lock.

Oh! I found newer trouble!
Speedometer did not move at all...

What happen in my car? Can I recover from this trouble with the Bosch tester?

Did a wheel speed sensor break or become disconnected?

I agree with Kang, it sounds more like a sensor problem. However, (and this is just a guess), with the new proportioning valve, I wonder if the pressure to the rear circuit is different enough to have caused some sort of alarm? But that seems like a rare guess.

A Bosch Hammer might be of some help with the ABS diagnosis.

I had the same thing happen to me. The fuse map on these cars is not complete. I suspect you have a bad fuse #16 (ABS on my car). It also affected the speedo.

Well, I'll check the wheel speed sensor and the fuse box again next week.

Now, a typhoon "MAN-YI" is approaching Japan.
As my garage is very small, it is difficult that I move about in the garage and do certain work...

Nice. I can't quite see in the first photo - is it left hand drive? If so, was it imported from the US or Europe?

FYI, Jae Lee is the well-respected owner of a local Porsche shop. He lived in Tokyo for 18 years and now exports hard-to-find parts to Japan. If you ever exhaust your local Porsche resources, an international phone call to Jae will be well worth the expense. Here is his web site:

Hi Kris,
Yes, my C2 is left drive. But it was imported by Japanese official Porsche dealer. The light hand Porsche is not liked by laying out the foot pedal in a Japanese market. Therefore, a right drive is very unusual.

Hello to all,

Today, I could solve the trouble of ABS of my C2. I checked the fuse box again. No,16 ABS fuse was good, and I remove the No,34 ABS relay. I shooked and beaten lightly it, and put it back in the box.


I started C2's engine and an alarm tone and warning lump was stopped!

I judged that the cause of the breakdown was this relay, and left for the shop for the inspection of the tester. After 5 mile drive, suddenly alarm tone sounded. I stopped the car and shocked the relay again. But the alarm was not stopped.
At the shop, a staff removed this relay and made a short circuit.


The alarm tone and the warning lamp were stopped perfectly. I ordered a new relay.

2 days ago, I wrote it...
This morning, very serious earthquake overcame the northern part of Japan, and 7 (or more) people died and over 800 people were injured now.

As my town is far away from the epicenter, the shake of the earthquake was small. In my garage, piled boxes dropped, and light scratch was made on a left fender.

My car's damage can be removed by polishing, but a lot of people in the Niigata area are in the extensive damage...

I would like to express my hearty sympathy with all victims.

I was in Yokosuka for three years, I felt many small earthquakes. Nothing like to one you just had. Sorry for the damage to C2, but more sorry for those injured and the ones that died.

I am happy for you to find the relay at fault. This was a good repair.
