993 got clipped, ?'s about repairs and impact on price

Parked my 993 and when I came out and there a dent on the right rear quarter panel and gouging/crack on the bumper. It looks like someone parked next to me and started turning too soon when leaving. The dent on the quarter panel is about 10" long and at its deepest is pushed in about 1/2" or so. The bad part is that it starts on the edge of the wheel well and goes back, where there's a lot of compund curves. The other driver didn't leave a note/number so I'm stuck taking care of it myself.

I'm going to the shop tomorrow and pretty sure that they're going to want to pull it out and smooth it with putty, etc. Is this acceptable or should I push to have a new section welded in?

Also, what effect do you think the damage/repair will have on the price of the car? Would one of the repairs (putty vs new panel) be less likely to reduce the value?

Thanks!

Sorry about your misfortune. Depending upon the buyer, a body repair may have negligible to substantial impact on valuation. A glancing blow such as you received does not impact any of the structural (or should not have) elements of the car - such as chassis alignment. I also presume it did not move anything inside the engine compartment as thats where the oil lines, etc. run.

For a minor dent as you have described, a good bodyman will be able to pull, hammer and work the metal to be nearly perfect, then filler is used sparingly to even the surface. A cheap repair is to use 1/2" or more of bondo and that's not acceptable for any car. I would not contemplate welding a new fender as that's major work ($$) and in my perspective for the amount of damage, would reduce value more.

The biggest issue is repainting - a great bodyshop will blend color as to be unfindable - within limitations of color. If your paint is clear coated, then the clear coat needs to extend to all natural seams/panel gaps which is the entire right, left and top (roof) panels - the fender is continuous through the roofline.

Recommend you update your profile with your location, then ask for recommendations on the main tech board and on Rennlist for bodyshops. You can also validate this recommendation by asking the local high-end (Aston, Porsche, etc.) dealers who they would take their cars to.

Good luck!

I just had some damage repaired on my rear bumper. (See pic )

According to Porsche and the body shop, the bumpers are not usually repaired, and are just replaced. The whole rear bumper is one unit. My damage was a tear as you can see, which is worse than a large scratch. Maybe you can get away without having to replace the whole bumper.

The total paid for by State Farm (It's about time I got my money out of them)was close to $2,000.00
