'89 C4: A/C Evap Replacement?
Anybody done this and have any advice? My recent recharge all leaked out. Local shop saying that evap is likely culprit - repair at the low low price of about $2K. Can this be done DIY? Life is good. Thanks.

$2000!!!!!!! (laugh) Oh - now that IS funny........
I should change my handle to the FRUGAL Porschephil..... You can buy the part here...... $428.08 http://www.autopartsworld.com/1989_porsche_carrera-4_a-c-evaporator_parts.html Or give the folks at Born Again Air a call at 800-482-8817. Probably get it for a lot less..... Now - considering what this is - I am *guessing* labor on this would be around 4 hours - MAX. Probably less. If you figure an average shop rate (at least around here) of $75.00 per hour - that would mean $300 - or less - in installation labor. Probably $700 or so installed - my best guess. Now - all of this said - why don't you spend $100 - have them shoot some dye in your system - charge it up - and see what turns purple from leakage? I am in the process of replacing most of my system for this exact problem - everything - EXCEPT - the evaporator. It is the one thing that DOES NOT leak for me..... Rebuilt Compressor - get ready - $325.00.... Dryer - $48 Expansion Valve - $32 Condenser - $249 Total cost a bit over $650. 5 hours to install - at a local rate of $75 per hour - $375. I will have my done - installed - WITH CONDENSOR - for $1100..... Take that out for your standard system which has a worn out compressor - $850 to redo the AC..... Compare that to the $2000 most Porsche shops quote.... Tip for the day..... Hope this helps. |

Replacing Evap
I'm finally getting around to this project. Gas tank and fire wall are out.
I'm wondering if the evaporator can be removed from the airbox assembly without removing the entire assembly? Thanks! Steve
