1989 Carrera - Correct Windshield Glass?
I have a 1989 (Anniversary Version) with the original 911 body (not the 964), and when ordering a replacement windshield from Speedy Glass was given a rather high price for the glass itself. I asked Speedy to run the part number and compare to that for 1990, 1991, etc, and was told it was the same, so I figured that would have been for the 964 and not my car. I then had them run the part number for the 1988 and noticed it was different. To be sure, I then had them run the latter back to early 1980's and found out it was the same as for 1988. I concluded Speedy was not aware that in 1989 there were two different 911s and that they were using the wrong part number, i.e., trying to sell me a 964 windshield. I, therefore, instructed them to use the 1988 part number.
This saved me a good $150, and I thought that this way I'd get the correct glass. When I arrived to pick up the car, the job was done, and the installer told me the glass I ordered was about 1/4" too small (1/8" top and 1/8" bottom), so he used glue to fill the gap. He also pointed out that my original glass had a black band at the bottom, whereas the replacement glass I ordered did not. By the way, I also had them use the original gasket since it was in good shape. So, I'm not sure whether the replacement gasket that they did not use would have filled the gap. My concern is whether there is any risk here. Any thoughts appreciated. Chris |

I had an 89 3.2 car once that used the 964 glass all around. Seems the factory at some point switched the 3.2 body top to the 964. Probably a midyear swap.

It should work with the 89 weatherstrip...I was told this. What weather strip did they use and is it for the 964? I would have looked at it before they instaled it. I didn't know they used glue.
Will the 89 glass work for all Carreras and does it still have the radio antenna and tinting? I am thinking of using the 89 glass in my 86 to eliminate the metal insert in the weather strip...I would use the later weatherstrip for 89. |

To: Group911 - Thank you for your thought.
To: DG624 - They used my old weatherstrip, which had a German manufacturer's name and I presumed was original 89' Carrera. I've only owned the car for 2 1/2 years. I would have looked too, had I been called and explained the fitting issue. The new glass, like the old has the antenna and tint. In the past day or two, I heard that glue minimizes risk of leakage, though it means the weatherstrip is history with the next change, though if I don't have a problem, I'm not expecting another change. |

I have a 87 and was told 87-89 can use 964 or 993 windshield with the correct seal. I chose to use 993 for smooth seal/weather strip. It's been on for a while and look/fit better than my old 911 windshield/seal. Wind noise reduced too.

1989 911 Windshield
Thanks. I'll be more educated for next time. However, when you refer to the correct gasket or wheatherstrip, do you mean the one for the 1987-1988 model or one of the one matching the later model?

AXIOM used 993 seal/gasket and 993 windshield on my 911. I heard you can use 964 windshield with 964 seal. I like the 993 seal better, smoother and a lot less wind noise. AXIOM did a very good job.

I have an '86 Carrera ...form all of these e-mails I think the 993 weatherstrip and windshield will work with the 84-89 Carrera without any metal insert and still have the antenna and the correct tint...Yes?

I wanted to ues the later weatherstrip and windshield so I asked Stoddard and got this reply:
All you need is windshield seal 964-541-225-00 $198-67. It does not accept trim and you reuse your original windshield not the 964 windsheild This sounds like he was recommending the 964 part for the weather strip. OK the 993 weather strip and windshiled was the recommended part here. I assume from rnln that the 993 is the best option right? |

after lot of search and questions, it is to me. I like the new windshield and seal look. Tinted on the top area, no metal insert seal, and completely smooth. It reduce a lot of wind noise, a lot.
If you search for "993 windshield" and my name, you can see I posted some pictures.
