It prevents water and grime from getting to the polished bits.
It costs $1.50 from Sunset or Sunnen. I just ordered one; you should too.

This is the piece that goes on the left side of the rack&pinion assembly?
I didn't even realize the plug was sold separately. I just replaced mine w/ a short bolt and nut (nut used to reduce the bolt's protrusion into the rack) from Fastenal after messing w/ the existing plug and having it come apart in my hand. |
