993 driving impressions

Might be in the market for a Porsche in the near future and was looking for some opinions.

I have narrowed it down to either a 78-89 930 Turbo coupe or a 993 coupe/targa. I think I like the looks and more modern interior of the 993, but wondering if the newer larger displacement engine would be comparable to the stock 930 performance?

I have never had the opportunity to drive a 993, but understand that short of straight line acceleration, the 993 should be superior. Is this correct?

Does the 993 face more depreciation? Will it be a mid teens car as the 80's carrera's are today? I keep thinking that the 930 Turbo might be the iconic Porsche that starts to gain in value, but just guessing.

Thanks for any input,
Steve

The 993 offers a much more modern driving experience; engine is linear, smooth, chasis has coilovers and multilink rear susp so it handles better and is smoother, 993 has power steering and hydraulic clutch. 930 is much more raw, has significant turbo lag, much harsher ride, heavy steering-but it is FUN. In terms of depreciation the 993's probably have not yet bottomed whereas the 930s are probably fully depreciated. I doubt nice 993s will ever be $15k cars.

A stock 993 has more HP then a 930, it's also faster then a stock 930. Don't forget the 930 only has 4 gears. The 993 is a modern classic, it's just like the older cars, just better & more refined. The 993 is still pretty fast even by todays standards.

Fun factor, the 930 is a load of fun, & a hard car to drive fast. It also looks cool!!

All cars are deprecating right now, but yes, in the future, they will go back up. The 993 will always be a sought after car, but so will the 930.

My advice go & drive both, get the one you like better.

Hi Steve,

I have both a stock '88 930 and a '96 993. You really need to drive both to appreciate the differences. It all depends on your personal preferences and how you plan to use the car. Feel free to PM me. I will send you my number and we can discuss it. Hard to do via a forum.

Most of what you will get here are generalities and it might be the details that make the difference for you.
