96,000 km Service Quote
Below is a quote from an independent Porsche shop in Toronto for what started as a 96k service.
As background I bought the 1996 911 cab 3 summers ago with 72,000 kms on it (103,000 today). It did not come with any service records. I have had the oil changes done of course but the car has not required anything else since then and continues to run fine. I have no problems with doing whats needed but does any of this look out of line or discetionary? I am pretty sure I can do the engine lid stays but dont have a garage, the tools or the skills to do much of anything else. One of the rear rims is cracked but no way I am paying $1700 for one rim. Can probably get 4 used for the same price. The mufflers are a bit of a puzzle but I havent heard his explanation on this yet (he just emailed me the quote). On the left cylinder barrels I believe they are "weeping" but not sure I need to do this now ($3300 ouch!!) Would be interested in opinions. Thanks 96000KM SERVICE-REPLACE SPARK PLUGS-IGNITION WIRES, FUEL FILTER-OIL FILTER-LABOR $1260.00 IGNITION WIRE SET $971.23 3 V-BELTS $76.00 OIL & FUEL FILTERS $70.00 VALVE COVER GASKET SET $196.77 SPARK PLUGS $131.52 REPLACE ENGINE LID STAYS LABOR-$105.00 STAYS $126.00 REPLACE LEFT SIDE AXEL CV BOOTS-LABOR-$367.50 CV BOOTS$136.00 MOUNT&BALANCE 4 TIRES-LABOR $210.00 L/R WHEEL RIM $1723.66 MUFFLER BAFFLES LOOSE LABOR $210.00 MUFFLERS OE $1572.64 REAR SPOILER CURTAIN $140.00 LABOR $105.00 RESEAL LEFT CYLINDER BARRELS-CHAIN HOUSING LABOR $3150.00 GASKETS $150.00 GASKETS |

Totally Ridiculous
You can do most of these yourself and the parts would be a lot less. I just got the Valve Gasket Set from P.P. for $22. I think yours is around $52.

But I dont think I can do most of these myself. I dont have a garage or the skill and trying to do it in my driveway in mid Nov in Toronto is not a good idea. The parts are priced in Cdn $'s so they are likely a little more expensive here. Is the work he is suggesting unreasonable?

Which muffler has the issue? Depending on which one, I would bypass it at considerably less cost.

Sorry I forget this is also a 993 forum as well and missed that you have a 993. If you had a 964, that would be the thing to do.

Ouch.
The 60K (96km service) is typically about $1-2K for a shop - parts and labor. His parts prices are really high. Unless he sees cracking, Plug wires are an option. Make sure he shows you all 12 replaced spark plugs (not 11). An hour of labor to replace engine lid struts is not out of place, but the strut costs are. I'd find a set of used mufflers or aftermarket before I paid $1.5K for new ones. You could definitely find a used OE wheel for $400. And there are places that repair them as well. Without seeing the labor on the reseal, if he drops the motor to do that, most all of the work on the items above just got really easy or are part of the motor R&R (CV's for example).

I think the best thing to do after all your fine advice is:
1. leave the chain covers alone as there is no other problem there and it doesnt need a valve job 2. see if i can buy some of my own parts or at least the ignition wires 3. ask him about some of the labour charges esp muffler removal charged twice 4. if there is a serious muffler problem go with fister, if not leave it alone as well 5. change the air filters as well 6. do the engine stays and spoiler curtain myself 7. find a used rim or new rims all around (either option likely cheaper than 1 new porsche rim) Thanks for the thoughts |

Like you, I'm about 1 hour from the border. I have the stuff deliver to a UPS Store. When you cross the border, there is no duty and you just pay the taxes (actually at the Niagara crossing they may actually waive you off, they did last time I cross it with $500 of stuff). The Tune Up Kits for the 911/993 (1996-98) at pelican is $365.75. Clewett Engineering 7mm Replacement Ignition Wires - BLACK, 911/993 (1994-97) are $545.50 So about $1100 CDN with taxes covers all the tune-up parts. In Ottawa most of the 3rd party shop let you bring your own parts. Post on the Canada forum, that you are looking for a good mechanic shop that let you supply the part, there should be dozen of them. Good Luck J.J.
