964 brake Pads
1992 964 C4.
All corners had caliper overhaul and new disc/pads fitted a while back . All well, could tell improvement from before. With time a very annoying brake squeal developed at low speed/ stopping. Lived with it for a while as a lot of threads said this could be a non-curable thing, but finally decided to take action. Located squeal to RHS front caliper with water spray bottle test. Picture shows front RHS pads on the right. Left hand side is on the left, rear pads had similar appearance to this one. Any ideas on RHS pads? Plenty of "groove" left in all of them. Not Official Porsche pads, looked like " Textar OEM" pads. Were fitted w anti-vibration spiders. Now replaced with Pagid OEMs, w/o spiders but w self- adhesive damper pad and tiny amount of anti squeal paste. ( I know opinion is divided on this.) No squeals, not even during bedding in, all quite, stops well but a bit more dust with the Pagid pads. Anyone seen or experienced anything similar?

I have never seen a brake pad deteriorate like that.
I am having the same brake squeal that you describe, slow speed, light pedal pressure, drives me crazy. I have tried all the standard tricks, rebuilt calipers, removed and cleaned spring plates, new pads/rotors, anti squeal plates, breaking in the pads using multiple high speed stops, and probably other things that I don't remember. The only thing I have not tried is grinding a bevel on the leading edge of the pad. I was curious about your mention of the spray bottle water test. Can you explain this test? I have not heard of this. Thanks

Hi Dave
Use a spray bottle , like the type to spray indoor plants with, filled w water. Simply spray one caliper/disc/pad set until quite wet. Get the car rolling, keep windows open so you can hear well, apply the brakes like u are stopping slowly, if now no sequel you know that this pad set/disc is squealing. Once the disc/pad has dried through friction heat the squeal will return. Hope this makes sense. |
