993 pinking
Hi guys, here is the situation.
When my car is at operating temp. or a little warmer in the traffic, when the outside temp is hot ( 85 + ) while unclutching the first in a hill, or at low RPM in second, the car pinks. ( I can here the valves ). Is this a warning of a valve job.or it can be adjust... No variocam this is a 1995. |
Definitely sounds like detonation under load. This can be dangerous to the engine if prolonged. Try switching to the highest octane gas you can find and also check that your ignition timing is correct.

What octane are you running? And do you have an aftermarket chip? |
Yes, I run 91 oct + a Steeve Wong chip.
Should I try octan booster before removing the chip. BTW, my SW chip wakes up the car alot. Thank you |
Is 91oct the max you can get? Not sure about octane boosters.
I have a Steve Wong chip as well, great upgrade for the '95's, I agree. A broken distributor belt can cause weird symptoms including pinging, how many miles on your car and when was the dizzy last serviced? 993 - Distributor Belt Procedure - pcarworkshop |

Hey, I got a 1995 as well, and only thought that Steve Wong made chips for 3.2's! How much of a difference do you notice with the 95, and where is the difference seen? How much for the chip too? Thanks! |
Distributor belt is also what I thought of! Please, check this out SOON!!! It might be an incorrect diagnosis, but you don't want to wait until that thing breaks!
Another thought, the valve lifters do eventually wear out. Can you check those out? Man, I do not have a procedure running through my head and my books are at home. Hopefully someone can chime in on this. |
Well, that's good infos.
1- 91 Oct is the max I can get, but tomorow I,ll try the new Shell nitrogen with a STP octane booster to gain 2 pts. 2- I have a appointment tomorow morning to check all these things. My mechanic already knows where to look but he feels like we put the wrong gaz in it for 1 tank.( Effectively, the wife tanked her last time and she doesn't remember if she put 91 in it.) 3-We did a month ago a huge inspection, changing all the fluids, belts, brakes,,,,,, total of 4000.00 4-The car has 80 000 miles and runs like a beast. Steeve Wong chip and cat bypass with original mufflers. It gives me the impression of driving another car since I put it in. I can't explain it well in english but this is the best 400,00 spent on that car. The difference is more significative than on my 3.2 1986... BTW, it feels like driving a 996 3.6 ( The kick it gives when you nail it ) Thank you. GO HABS GO |
1. See if wifey used a card and see if you can't find a recipt with a price that can give clue to potentially what fuel was used.
2. One of my facilitys is in a desert " lol " and so such problems are not un common. You really need to go and check the belts and ignition system, etc. 3. Now I have not used a SW unit. But depending on how SW programmed specific parameters in conjunction this could easily be a issue, if you added items " performance parts " post SW install the settings would not be ideal. If that's even the problem, inspect the injectors, oxygen sensors and metering devices. I have more suggestions but primary systems should be checked. But pings are no bueno! Good luck! PM me if you want. |
Either low octane fuel or your car needs a tune-up.
Plugs, wires dist. cap, and rotor. Maybe the temp gauge is innacurate and your car is running hot. |
I'm now using V-power ( OCT 91 with azote additive RON94 ) from Shell and I never heard back any strange sounds from there.
Thank you, |
Ok so your no longer hearing the ping?? Sometimes it happens, usually Shell or Mobile are my prefured to tune with. But the others are not too bad. Anyways good luck.
|
If you are the original buyer of thre Steve Wong chip. he will have you in his data base You can call him and he can tell if the chip was tuned for 91 octane or higher. He will also probably retune it for a nominal charge if needed.I had one of his 3.6 chips with a conversion in a 1980 He offered to alter the idle program to fix stalling for me with a newer tune. Very knowledgable and nice guy.
