2006 997 C2S Cab for 1990 964 C4? Am I crazy???

Just wondering your thoughts and opinions.....I have been enamored by the air cooled 911's for a VERY VERY long time...and I really love the 964. I am seriously considering trading in my 2006 997 C2S Cab for a 1990 C4S Coupe. I am going to check the car out this weekend. I was just wondering if any of the other 964 aficionados here on this forum have ever done something like what I am thinking of doing, and if so, were there any regrets? Pros? Cons?
I really like my C2S cab, but after test driving 2 964's i have to say that the feeling was totally different, and to me, much more enjoyable than the 997....crazy huh?
I am hesitant only because I fear that an older car might turn out to be a maintainance nightmare, and might end up costing me big bucks for repairs and the like in the future. The car WILL be my daily driver, and I cannot have 2 cars. Any and all thoughts, advice, critiques, encouragements are welcome!!! I am having quite the dilemma here!!! Thanks in advance to all who reply!

Abdon

I have a 993 that I love dearly, although you are correct in your assessment that it is a wildly different experience from your 997. I also have a Cayman, which is an extremely technical driving machine.

I term them like this to those who visit my garage;

993=visceral connection
987c=technical perfection

Both are fine sports cars, but honestly, if I had to choose--its the Cayman. Its comfort level combined with its performance and age offer a more usable car.

However I completely understand your desire to step back into the aircooled world. I myself sometimes yearn for the simplicity of my '89 911 over the somewhat more intricate design of the 993.

Where are you located? I would be interested to know why you are considering a 964 over a 993. The two cars are different enough that you might better drive both before making this decision.

I currently own a 1990 964 and I wouldn't use it as my daily driver.

Personally I would stay with the 997 as my daily driver.

Anything over 20 years old will not be as reliable as your 2006 997.

As a second summer car the 964 is perfect.

My 964 is my only car and I could not keep it if I had to pay someone else to fix things (although it would be the same with a 997)

That said I am looking for a "grocery getter" to use as a second car (Thinking about a Passat Wagon), which will hold more, and absorb the door dings that the 964 wont be getting!

With a valve adjust taking a few days a second car is almost a necessity

Thanks for the responses guys!!!
@ Justin, I live in South Florida. The main reason for the 964 over the 993 is prely aesthetic. I really like the "look" of the 964. I love the fact that it retains the "old school" lines but with a bit more rounded edges, so to speak, and some basic creature comforts such as the improved AC and the power steering.

I am really really trying to convince myself that the 997 is a much more usable daily driver (it is), and I will likely wait until I am able to have both, and use the 964 on weekends/summers. I WISH I could have both NOW!!! Oh well....we'll see what happens after I drive the 964 on Saturday!!!

Thanks again guys!!!

Dear Abdon

I have a 964 and I been thinking about a newer 911. Tell me about your ride on Saturday and impressions on the difference.

I might be in the up for a trade?

Andrew

964 for 997

964 values seem stable (maybe appreciating?) while 997 values continue to dramatically decline. i really like 997's and look forward to "trading" my 964 (or one of my other early cars) once 997 values have bottomed out. i just don't know when, if ever, that will happen.

LoL..... crazy...... 997 is a great everyday car..... I'd recommend buying a 964 and living with it for a couple of months before a cold swap.....

964 C4 is a great daily; mine gets 2x the miles as my CR-V. You should make yourself aware of the quirks it has, though- there are some potentially spendy bits that can go wrong, with the climate control unit being right up there.

Mechanically, they're quite robust; the awd is known to be largely problem free. they are old, however, and the plastic/rubber parts are getting tired with all that entails- mine leaks enough oil that I park over cardboard, and I replaced the clutch slave and associated soft line recently. Having said that.... they're old-school, true 911s; aircooled, original body lines... I wouldn't want anything else.

Man I would definitely keep the 997 CAB especially now knowing the fact that you live in Florida.

I really like my 964 but there's no way it matches the comforts of the 997 especially with the a/c.
